Scott, assuming you read this, you will not get replies to your e-mail,
at least not from me. NG's are for discussion, not slots to request info.
I recently bought the Manfrotto 410 (= Bogen 3275 I believe).
A bit large but definitely great for composition when you have the time
and need tight compositional control. I actually bought it to use with
my Hasselblad 500C/M for which it is a good match esp. for landscapes
and still-nature shooting. For my 35mm and DSLR I prefer a ball head,
but now use the geared head as well for some subjects.
I like the "drag" on the controls as it reduces back and forth
adjusting. By carefully looking in the viewfinder for whatever framing
elements are needed and alignment marks, accurate orienting and
"leveling" of the camera is a snap. Pulling the knobs out allows for
fast rough positioning with the only caveat that the knobs can "hang"
extended and it takes a small twist to seat the gears.
"Wrong knobing" is common for a while until you learn which knob for
which axis. That is to say, while you're concentrated on composition,
you are likely to grab the vertical knob when it is the "heading" knob
that you wanted.
The quick release plate is somewhat large. No problem on a 500C/M but a
bit much on a 35mm sized SLR.
Cheers,
Alan
