You can't. CS can't use the later versions of the Adobe
Camera Raw (ACR) plugin, ACR 2.4 is the last version
available.

You can however download the latest (3.5) version of ACR
plus the stand-alone DNG converter program that comes with
it. Discard the ACR plugin but use the DNG converter to
convert your Canon raw files to DNG.

Ensure you have ACR2.4 installed and the DNGs will open with
CS.

I should be getting a 5D tomorrow, and wonder if Lightroom handles the
RAW files from it without having to go through DNG? Or are there any
steps I need to take to make it so?

Looks as if it'll be OK:

It does, and I'm convinced that Beta 4 is better than Aperture
(pre-1.5) or the latest Capture One, both of which I've used
extensively. Lightroom Beta 4 is great (I use a 20D, but the software
should be no different with 5D RAW), and it allows me to "save"
important images from my archives that Aperture, CaptureOne, ACR, and
Lightroom 3 could do nothing for. It is great software, but I warn:
using it may lock you into a need to buy it when your beta expires (I
know I'm in that boat... I cannot imagine going back).

Thanks. I rather like it as well, and I will probably buy the commercial
release, as well as PS CSIII next year. But I am taking courses, and
will continue with the student thing for at least another year.

It's supposed to arrive today, and it's a bit like waiting for Santa.....

You need Photoshop CS2 to work with ACR 3.4. Get the upgrade CS2 is a
has some very nice features, one of the biggest is a healing brush that
doesn't need a start point (I scan a lot of slides from old slide
presentations). I believe it is $160 from Adobe, available on most SW
shopping sites.
