Lens for the D200

What is the best lens for general use with the Nikon D200. A camera shop
told me that the lens (AF-S NIKKOR 18-70mm will be OK.

Currently I use the AF-S NIKKOR 18-70mm with a Nikon D70s and it works fine.
But, I would like to purchase a lens for general that best suits a D200. I
don't know if  a camera shop can be trusted to correctly suggest something.

Thanks

The 18-70 is a surprisingly good lens (assuming, as always, a good sample).
The 17-55 f2.8 is slightly sharper, but at a much higher price. It is also
larger and has less zoom range. Why not continue to use the 18-70 until
you find a need for something else? Also, if you have older lenses (AI or
later), these will work with the D200...

Thanks David,

I'll just buy the D200 body and look around for other types of lens such as a wide angle lens. Most of my other lens are for slr Olympus cameras.

The new 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 Silent Wave is pretty good. If you have the
older, cheaper kit lens the faster new ones is worth the upgrade.

The Nikon 18-70 is a very good lense and will work fine with the D200.
I don't believe there are any other lenses that can outperform it in
the same price range.

Better lenses do exist, but at a significantly higher cost. The 18-70
is a good all around performer suitable for general use.

???

What do you mean "new"? The 18-70 has been around for well over two
years and there has only been one version of it. To the best of my
knowledge, Nikon has never made any other 18-70 model:

Perhaps you're thinking of the 18-55 kit lense from Canon which had a
version 2 model released a couple of years later.

How true. There`s now 'new' 18-70 mm. lens.....
Dimitris M - 03 Oct 2006 23:09 GMT
I use the 18-200 VRII for general use. It is at least as good the 18-70 is
but it covers the useful range to 200mm. The VR is perfect, now I can't do
without it. The only problem is that is heavier and bigger than the 18-70.

As others have pointed out, the 18-70mm is an excellent lens for general
use, and beyond.  I've used one, but later upgraded to the 17-55mm f/2.8 for
the added speed.  This allows for more natural light photo opportunities,
and/or faster shutter speeds.  But you may not need either.  There is more
than an added cash price to pay, it is larger, and heavier.  And if you use
filters, they cost more because they are larger.  The 18-70mm is close to
being a 4x zoom, where the 17-55mm is a little over a 3x zoom...another
trade off.

Nikon packages the D200 in one of their kits with the 18-70mm lens.  That
was the kit I originally purchased.  So in no way is the lens not worthy of
the camera.

Why not get a D80 and put the difference in glass?
Robert Nabors - 04 Oct 2006 02:39 GMT
Well, a few of the differences that makes me consider buying the Nikon D200
instead of the Nikon D80 are:

The D200 has:

A metal construction, that is weather resistant compared to a plastic D80.

A speed of 5FPS compared to 3FPS on the D80.

The D200 also has the below listed features not found on the D80:

Set ISO with full stops

Meter mode is in the finder

Exposure mode in finder

9 position Rear Nav Button compared to 4 Position on the D80

There are probably other different features of which I am not aware, and it
is true that the light weight of the D80 is a plus for the D80. However the
strength of the metal case appeals to me even though the D200 is heavier

There is no difference in the way a lens performs no matter which Nikon
DSLR you stick it on. The D70 and the D200 have a sensor of the same
physical dimensions.

The 18-70mm is a good lens, surprisingly sharp. If you don't want to
use that any more, go to the 18-200mm AF-S VR. It is an extremely
versatile lens.

But you won't see much difference in your pictures whether you stick it
on the D200 or the D70.

Are you sure about that?  Are you speaking from experience?  I see a big
difference between 6.1, and 10.2mp.  I've owned the D70s, and currently own
the D200.

I am quite sure and I am speaking from experience. I have both a D70
and a D200 and have shot more than 20,000 frames between the two of
them. I don't see a lot of difference in my pictures -- from a certain
point of view.

Now, it is true that you will get more detail with a 10.2mp sensor than
you will with 6.1. However, we rarely look at our pictures that close.
In fact, the vast majority are never printed at all. They end up being
displayed on computer screens. For that kind of work you might as well
have a 3mp sensor.

A D200 is not 'sharper' than a D70. It does not have less distortion.
In many other respects, all of them important to picture quality, a
D200 is little different from a D70. Nevertheless, knowing all this, I
bought a D200. You might be wondering why.

Well, the 10.2mp sensor does give me a lot more room to crop and blow
up a small portion of the image. And the extra detail does show up in
large prints. I also find that the camera is much more flexible and
that frequently changing many settings is a lot faster and more
convenient.

But I cannot say that any lens performs better on the D200 than on the
D70, nor can I say that I take better pictures overall with the D200
than I did with the D70. I still own bragging rights to being a
terrible photographer and will claim that title 'til I die. :-)

He said not much difference between the picture between the two cameras.  The
resulting file clearly will have more potential resolution from the D200.  The
results from the lens will be the same on both cameras, which is the point I
took from his post.

Optically maybe, AF wise that is NOT the case in my experience, especially
pushing a 70-200mm f/2.8 VR with a TC-20E. The D200 also retains AF out to
a max aperture of f/8 in my experience as well, though Nikon states f/5.6
is the limit as with the D70.

Yeah, and the D200 has more buttons and switches for setting autofocus,
too. But those are ease-of-use issues between the D200 and D70, not a
function of the lens.

Huh?  What does switches and buttons for autofucus have to do with
diminished AF performance when a 2X TC is added?  Adding a TC to a lens
system *IS* a function of the lens and its performance.

Any chance you are in an area where you can rent lenses to try?

Well, I bought a Nikon D200 and the AF-S NIKKOR 18-70 works just as well as
it does on my D70s!!  I'll be thinking about a wide angle lens after I use
the D200 for  a while.

Thanks for all the info.
