On camera lens filters

Question for those of you that use filters:

I'm looking to get some filters for my XT. Is the Cokin P series filter
holder pretty standard... and just purchase the filter/mfgr of your choice?

Yup, as long as the "after market" filters say they are "P" compatible.
I have gotten quite a few good non Cokin filters on Ebay.
