I have a Nikon 8008s film AF SLR. I got a Nikon digital auto focus
18-55mm soom lens. How do I get the thing to auto focus?
Thanks

You won't. The 18-55 is an AF-S lens and, as such, focus is driven
electronically. The 8008s is from an era when the AF lenses focus were
driven by the small "driveshaft" at about the 7:00 o'clock position around
the lens opening on the body. It is driven by the focusing motor in the
body. The AF-S lenses have the focusing motor in the lens and generally
focus much faster. The body needs to be of the era of the F70, F90 or the
F4 to be able to focus with both the AF-S and the AF lenses.

If by digital you mean a DX series lens return it before you can't. It
will most likely give you bad vignetting on a 35 film body even if you
sort out the autofocus problem. If a salesman sold you that lens
knowing it was for a film body then smack him over the head with it
till he takes it back. Check the Nikon website for appropriate lenses
for that body.

You were sold a DX lens. This lens projects an image circle 1/2 the
size of the 35mm film lens. This lens is designed for the Nikon Digital
SLRs. If you insist on using it, make sure the slider on the lens to
the "A" position. You may get a usable image at the 55 mm focal length.
