Transcend cards generally go for half the price of similar sized SanDisk
cards, is price an indication of their performance and durability or are
they just as good?

I have no knowledge of the Transcend cards, but they may not have the read
write speed of SanDisk. If your camera doesn't need a high speed card, and
you don't mind it taking a bit longer to download the pictures to your
computer, go for it.

Just ordered an 8Gb Trancend CF card today. I will see how is the
performance when I get it.

PS I almost got caught in the e-Bay counterfit SanDisk CF cards scandal,
this is why I was asking about Transcend cards.
