Hi. I'm wondering, can I use the Canon EF50mm f1.8 lens on my EOS
350D? I have tried the standard lens but it's not really suitable for
my subject matter... portrait in low light/club/indoor.
A friend suggested a standard 50mm lens at a wide aperture might do the
trick.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Ben

Yes, you can. Or go for a faster 50mm, the 1.4, which I have and like.
The 1.2 is, uh, well, /very/ pricey.

Check out Canon's 28mm f1,8 it is almost like a "normal" lens on a 35mm.
Fast and light too.

But costs three or four times as much; I have the EF 50mm f1.8 lens on
my list, having recently moved to digital and having to replace all my
lenses.

I know, but it is more useful being a "normal" lens. The 50mm f1,8 IMHO
works better as a portrait lens. I could take a 28mm f1,8 on trips as my
only lens and be OK for 95% of the shots, for a truly go anywhere do
anything lens, the 17-40mm f4 L is the best choice (for me). I did buy a
50mm f1,8 but I never use it, too long for indoor use.

A 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens wtih more bang for the buck than anything
else offered, and it's good for shooting single subjects, but if you
have 2 or more subjects and in regular sized rooms, it's too long on a
350d, which is among the 1.6x crop cameras (like my 300d).
But it's absolutely worth having as the only lens faster than f/2.0
for under $100!

I have this lens on my Rebel 300D, and absolutely love it. My other two
lenses are the 18-55 kit lens, and the 75-300 IS. I find that the
75-300 takes better pictures than the kit lens, but the 50mm 1.8 is
gorgeous. It's gotten to the point that I keep my camera with the 50mm
mounted, and switch to the 18-55 if I need a wider reach. It's great in
low light, of course, but even in better light it just looks so much
better than the kit lens.
And it's cheap! I''ve heard that the 50mm/1.4 is better, and I'm sure
the L lenses are better yet, but for $100 you can't go wrong. I'm now
considering picking up a wider lens to go with it (28mm or 35mm) and
getting away from the kit lens entirely.

Yes. It is a superb lens at an amazing price.
You would have to stand back a bit for group shots. We use it for
group shots. With that lens, they come out well.

If you like 50/1.8, when you want a low light tele lens, you can add a
85/1.8.
