Hello all,
I recently received a replacement *ist DL after I returned my old one
for a non-functioning flash.
However, I'm now seeing (or rather hearing) some behavior from my new
*ist's flash that makes me wonder whether everything is okay.
In dark situations, when the camera is having difficulty focusing, the
flash pseudo-fires twice to help the autofocus. That's no problem, but
when it pseudo-fires like that, the flash makes an almost sizzling or
buzzing noise that's very noticable. Is that normal? I don't remember
my first *ist doing that, but then again, its flash eventually failed
and so it may not have been at full speed from the beginning.
Am I just gunshy after being burned once? Can other *ist DL owners let
me know if their cameras do the same?
Cheers,
Chris Hafner

I don't have that camera, but is it possible that the autofocus-assist
is done by pulsing the flash on and off rapidly? I know that my Nikon
speedlight buzzes when I use the modelling light, for that reason.

That sounds exactly like it, thanks Doug.

That's the flash discharging so the auto-focusing system can get a read on
what you're trying to shoot. After all, the camera needs light to focus,
right?

I think he already acknowledged that, don't you?
As in "... the flash pseudo-fires twice to help the autofocus. That's no
problem,.."
