Unless you shoot sports and a LOT of em, I imagine you'ld be better
served by taking the money saved by going 350D and spending it on
glass.

Or if you shoot snow, or flowers, or anything else where you want spot
metering. I didn't consider Canon's low or medium end until the 30D
came. For me, the spot metering was a deal maker.
(Altough I would ideally have liked the spot zone a bit smaller still.)
And the 350D was never really an alternative. Because I also shoot
scientific documentation with it, it had to enable digital verification
of non-tampered images.
