I checked out the Canon 20D on the beach today.
It had the kit lens(Super Wide Angle EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6,
the focal length is equivalent to approx. 28-90mm in 35mm format.)
The zoom is less than on most P&S.
The AF worked well, the LCD was too small, too many buttons and other
bells and whistles which casual users/non-pros wont use.
It wasnt too heavy or too bulky for an SLR;However, if I were to carry
3+ suitcases
on a trip, I would take a P&S instead.
I used a 350D before, and could not tell the difference between it and
the 20D.
I sure hope the $450 price difference is justified. If anyone could
name atleast 5
useful features at $90 each on the 20D not on the 350D, I'd consider
buying it.
Conclusion: Would I want to walk around a city with an SLR around my
neck... NO!
IMHO, get an SLR if you are a pro who is planning to get several
lenses.
DO NOT get an SLR if you are going to drive on auto all the time.
PS: Besides the 2mp difference, is there anything that the Canon 350D
has that the Nikon D50 doesnt (which is $50 less w/kit lens)?

You are a P&S type. Case closed!

The 350D has at least these features that the D50 does not:
1. Depth of field preview button. D50 does not.
2. 350D is a lot smaller than the D50.
3. 350D is a lot lighter than the D50.
4. Meters through any lens in Av or M modes even if it is a fully manual
lens. This allows stop down metering.
5. Real shutter function at all shutter speeds to 1/4000s. My
understanding is that the D50 does electronic shuttering as well as real
shuttering to reduce cost. Correct me if I am wrong.
6. Cleaner images at 1600 ISO.
7. Fully lossless RAW capture with smaller files.
8. Compact flash on the 350D vs SD cards for the D50.
9. Wired shutter release available for the Canon.
10. OEM battery grip available for the Canon.
11. B/W shooting modes.
12. CMOS sensor VS CCD on the Nikon.
13. Canon doesn't have Sony parts in it.
14. ISO100 is available on the 350D. The D50 only goes to ISO200.
15. Built in flash on 350D has coverage for 17mm and guide number of 13
meters at ISO100. The D50 flash only has a guide number of 11 meters.
16. The 350D captures 3 frames per second vs 2.5 on the D50.
17. The 350D viewfinder adjusts from +1 to -3 diopters. The D50 only has
from +0.5 to -1.6.
The D50 has a few features better than the 350D like faster flash sync and
tighter spot metering (2.5% vs 9%).

Personally... burst frame rate did it for me when choosing between 20D and
350D. Plus the 100K vs 50K shutter life expectancy. I went for 20D and
havent regretted it. You tend to get what you pay for - I expect 20D to
perform flawlessly for years to come, and I shoot outdoors most of the time
(think blowing sand, water splashes etc)
I'm not sure but think 20D has more sophisticated metering features as well.

So, what seems to be the problem? With a name like that you should definitely
have a much more interesting place to hang your SLR on than just a "neck".
