busted my arm, full recovery of range of motion in right arm uncertain. hope
i will be able to continue using my d-50 slr. would hate to go back to using
p&s camera.

any workarounds in case healing is less than optimal?

rudy.

I suppose there's no reason it can't be used upside down in the left
hand.

So I just went and tried it.  My little finger second knuckle rested
on the shutter release and with practice I reckon I'd be able to
control the focus lock and recompose before releasing the shutter.  I
had difficulty holding the camera steady, but I was able to hold my
left hand firmly against my forehead, remember the viewfinder is now
at the bottom so the camera is basically up against my forehead.

i would never have thought of that. now of course, i will have to try it.
this may all be moot if healing goes well. i am busy with the self pity,
hopefully i will tire of it soon.

thanks.

I had a rotator cuff injury in my right shoulder in mid 2003 and had
surgery in October 2004.  My shoulder gets sore from lengthy periods
holding the camera, but gosh it's worth it.  My D50 normally has an
18-200 VR attached to it, so it weighs a reasonable amount for the
weakling female that I am.

One of my workmates has one on a D200, makes for a fairly large package.
Mind you another workmate has a D2X and a 70-200mm VR and that is a lump and
a half, he has a site at www.macattack.com.au

Hello,
How about using it with the left arm and a remote release (ie both hold
and trip shutter with left arm)? Don't know if it does have a cable
release, IR release might be problematic.

Hope you recover fully though.

i have hopes for good recovery, otherwise will just have to adapt.

d-50 has ir remote. i will prevail.

You could try a monopod and use that to stabilize your camera. If you
have some usage in your hand at this stage of your recovery, having the
camera mounted on the monopod will take the pressure of supporting the
camera off your right hand and arm.

Depending on the type of photography that you do, you could also mount
the camera on a tripod. A shoulder strap will help when carrying it
around.

Good luck on your recovery. Try to be optimistic.
