Does anyone know if the raw input of Elements 4 is the same as the full feature
CS2 version?

I have Elements 4 and I don't want to blow $850 on software that has the same
raw ability...

Also - anyone know of a plugin for  .ARW files?

Just download Lightroom, it's free, it uses the same ACR converter, and
it has the extra bells and whistles you get when that converter works in
CS2. Elements 4 has a lot of stuff disabled, like resizing files
directly from raw, chromatic fringe correction, colour calibration etc.

Has Lightroom caught up with ARW files yet? (Aren't they only used for
the A-100? That was only supported unofficially in ACR 3.4).

Yes. Lightroom appears to use the common Adobe library, which is where
ACR 3.4 is stored to make it accessible by all Adobe progs.

It does not have exactly the same controls.

see:

I've put up a screen shot of Lightroom Public Beta 3 developing a 1600
ISO .ARW file with some noise and tone control set. The image is viewed
at 100 per cent in the Lightroom window.

Thanks. I knew they shared code. I didn't know that both had released
the results - my reading was that Lightroom releases tended to lag
behind.

With my existing Adobe account I couldn't, so I just created a new
account using my gmail address.  It's DLing as I write this.

If it can help me with my Max 7D images en bloc, then it may be a good
adjunct to Elements.

Cheers,
Alan

IS crap!  I Emailed them and will see what will happen... I don't have another
account or Email address...

Do you know if it is generic software? Will one persons' download work on
anybody's computer?  If so I'll get my Nephew to get it...

Yeah, a copy should work, it's about 120 MB

I also noticed that the splash screen says that the s/w will expire at
some undefined point in the future.

Probably in Januari 2007.

Also note that it is a (public) Beta version. It is intended as a
works in progress, concept testing version, and features can and wil
be either dropped or added as they go to the next (Beta) version.
Also, the output results may not be the same as from future releases
using the same settings, and the database may be incompatible with the
final release.

People are encouraged to try it, report issues and whishes, but NOT to
use production critical images for testing. For all we know it might
damage a Raw file, so use a backed-up copies. The code also is far
from optimized, so it is *extremely, unworkably* slow right now. There
are some who expect 2 more releases before Version 1.0, and it may
take well into version 2.0 before some of the former Pixmantec
capabilities come into effect.

I tried to import a library of some 80 images (RAW) to work on.  The
machine laboured mightily for a while (a minute or so) and then stopped
labouring.  Nothing else hapeened.  Eventually, I quit the program and
re-started it.  Laboured again (on my instantiation) for a minute and up
came the library.

For output I haven't figured out how to save finished work.  Not sure if
it is whacking my RAW's (dates haven't changed, so I assume not)...

As to the value of the tool, it has much better (but incomplete) RAW
controls.  For example, I'd like to change skin tones with a CMY
"probe", but it only has RGB.  (Yes, the RAW is RGB, but it could report
to me the CMY values ... this is for skin tones, (MY) esp.)

Cheers,
Alan

File->Export... opens a dialogue where you can choose location, file
format etc. My limited use of Lightroom hasn't thrown up any problems
with Canon RAW files; after processing in LR the RAW is left unaltered
and readable in all other applications.

I had the same problem. Didn't get a decent answer from Adobe.
Finally figured the reason: my password for the original account only had 4
characters.
After changing to 8 characters it worked fine for the downloadsite.
