Back-up camera for Nikon D70s

Hello out there!
Since december 2005 I am using the Nikon D70s. Now my work with the camera
gets more professional, so I want to buy another camera to have a back-up.
Until recently the D200 was my clear choise. Another D70s would not give me
anything more than I already have, why I think that would be a poor choise.
The D200 would give me a lot more.

Now the D80 is coming. Should I wait and see, if that could be a good
choise, or is the D200 always the better camera in this trio?

Your opinions are very welcome!

Why buy a much more expensive camera to have as a back-up?   THis
implies you are still to use the D70s as trhe main camera.

The very definition of a back-up.

The shouldn't it be your main camera and the D70s become the back-up.

The D80 uses different memory.

I think you mean the D200 would become your main camera and the D70s
would be the backup camera in case the main camera fails? If so, the
D200 is a very good choice.

The D200 is a better camera in almost every way. But the D80 will be
quite a bit less expensive with most of the performance of the D200.

I think you need to consider what you're using now, and if the D200 is
worth the extra money over the D80.

If you give us more information about what you want to do with the
camera, perhaps we can offer more specific recommendations.

Typically the older camera becomes the backup.

The D80 uses SD memory v. the CF in your D70s which makes for poor
interchangeability.

Buy a second D70s ... the prices will be colapsing now ... esp. on used
D70s'.

Or, upgrade to a D200 and the D70s becomes the backup.

Cheers,
Alan

Not really. There are SD to CF converters available. He could stick on
in the D70 and then standardize on SD.

Why?  Think of it as a set of training wheels for the stupid that can be
used to facilitate the advancement of the proper technique of inserting CF
cards.

That was my thought - to buy a D200 and let the D70s be the backup. In that
way I would get a better camera and still have a good backup camera. And
here I would like to know, if you wold clearly recommend the D200 instead of
the D80. Even if an extra D70s would be the cheapest way to get a backup it
also would not give me anything new - no better resolution, no more fps and
so on. The higher price just means, that I have to save money for a longer
time! :-)

The spec at dpreview for the D80 is wholly respectable.  There is
nothing deadly wrong with it, although the SD card thing to me is a bit
of a strange change.  With the savings you look to better lenses which
is more important in any case.  Or perhaps a high end flash, if needed.
 Or a CF tripod.  Or...

Cheers,
Alan

The D200 is clearly the better camera, with more features and
capabilities.

But you have to ask yourself one question...do I feel lucky?

:-)

Oops...I mean do you feel that those features and capabilities will be
useful to YOU and your shooting style?

I think the memory card issue has gotten silly as prices have
plummeted.  With a 2GB SD card going for well under $100 (more like
$50).
