anyone have any strong feelings, good/bad about the panasonic dmc-tz1?
i'm thinking of getting one as a backup camera with a neat telephoto -
main camera is a canon 5d ...

Not quite the same, but I got a DMC FZ-30 recently - likewise as a backup to
two dSLRs. A similarly configured beast, I understand.

Very disappointed.

Its fine outside, in bright light, or at close range indoors, but as soon as
you challenge it with low light it is quite hopeless.

Having said that, it does have some very neat features - such as the
tilt-and-swivel EF for overhead or ground-level shots.

The VR works, but not as well as my Nikon 24-120.

The EF is horribly "pixelly", as you'd expect, and it *will not* focus
reliably at long focal lengths and long distances.

Within its limits, its a fine camera.
Don't get it if you do a lot of low light stuff, though.

It looks like the DMC-TZ1 sells for about $400.  For that price it appears
that you could get a Canon Digital Rebel (300D) on eBay and that would work
with all of your 5D lenses, compact flash etc.

i also have a rebel but somehow with a 300mm lens it isn't quite as
small as the panasonic :-) ...

But not with the same weight, size and ease of carriage.  This is a 234g
compact camera with a 35 - 350mm image stabilised zoom, and would probably
be used on those occasions when lugging around a 5D and all its lenses was
not appropriate.  I would love one!

Fuji F30 seems to be a better bet, depending on what you want to do.

the fuji is a very nice camera but doesn't quite have the reach of the
350mm on the panasonic ...
