Hi all,
How long should one expect a transfer of files from card reader to hdd take.
I poped my 1gb extreme 3 card in my usb2 reader and 461 large fine files of
approx 2.5 megs apeice took around 17 mins. Is this to be expected? Or can I
do better?

Thanks for any info

Sounds more like 1.1 speed to me.

On one of my USB 2.0 hi-speed systems, I recent measured, for a small
number of large files:
 SanDisk Ultra II CF - 551MB in 62s => 8.89MB/s

On another PC, I had previously measured:
 SanDisk Ultra II SD - 294MB in 51s => 5.76MB/s
 SanDisk Ultra II CF - 521MB in 94s => 5.54MB/s

USB 2.0 hi-speed is /not/ the same as USB 2.0 "full-speed".  Most
confusing!  Check that you really have USB 2.0 hi-speed.  See:

I recently went through a usb upgrade and troubleshooting to get to fastest
usb 2.0 and found a new usb cable solved the speed problem.

sounds like usb1.1 speed

I just did a test,

2 year old notebook with 4200rpm harddrive usb2.0 ports
el cheapo usb 2.o card reader
Sandisk UltraII 2gig compact flash card

267 photos at 640megs transferred in 3mins 51seconds, transfer speed
2847kbytes per second

same setup but with an older Sandisk usb 1.1 card reader took 10mins
54seconds, transfer speed 996kbytes per sec

and to go a bit further, plugged in an external USB h/drive 7200rpm 200gig

files from the card straight to ext drive was a little slower at 4mins
1sec, transfer the files back to the notebook drive from ext h/drive
1min 28secs
