Thinking of buying...
Tom - 04 Jul 2006 23:58 GMT
I own one. Incredibly versaitile and very sharp. Last I heard they were
almost impossible to obtain. When you can get one, do! You won't be
sorry. I use it with both my D70S and D200. If someone forced me to
have only one lens, this would be the one!

This seems to be a love it or hate it lens.  Would you care to explain
why you said NO!!?

Barelling and pincushion at either end is typical of such a mega DX 11.1 x
zoom. Plus it wont be happy on my F100. I am happy to change my lenses more
often, none of which exceed 3.5 X

So, you haven't used it and you are presuming its characteristics not from
experience, but from the fact that it is an 11.1X zoom?

Hi Thom,
Plenty of experience old boy! And who said I have never used it? You assumed
this from my post huh! Well as a matter of fact I never said it was a bad
lens, just one i would'nt be getting and the reasons why, (read again) The
11x is useful but I would not compromise sharpness and clarity for
features..... and as a DX lens it would not be a happy bunny on my F100
except perhaps at the long end. I prefer the feel and balance of the betteer
pro zooms I use allbeit at a price. You pays yer money and takes yer
choice!!!!!

So, because it will not work well on your F100 you do not recommend
that anybody get it for their digital SLR? An interesting point of
view, but one that some people here might think is irrelevant on the
digital SLR group.

I would indeed expect some severe distortion and vignetting on an F100,
but most people find that the lens performs very well on a DX sensor.
Of course, if Nikon ever brings out that D3, we probably won't want any
DX lenses for it, will we? On the other hand, they will still work on
my D200 (if Adorama ever manages to deliver it) and it does very well
on the D70 until  then.

I use the 18-200mm lens on my D200 with DXO correction software as part
of my workflow. The DXO algorithm nicely corrects the barrelling and
pincushion distortions that you are referring to. Regards,  David

Can it be done in batch mode on a folder full of 18-200mm pictures? I don't
know do any processing of my pictures. I take too many and I don't want to
spend the time. Cropping and stitching the panoramas is time consuming
enough. I also have 12-24mm pictures that I presume could also use some
post processing. They are now mixed in the same folder, but I know I can
easily write some software to look at the Exifs and split them into two
folders.

Then would you do this processing on images that are going to be fed into
PTGui?

The DXO software can certainly be used selectively if that's your need.
Every photo need not be processed; just your selects.  Also, you do
not have to separate the photos. The software recognizes the different
lenses used and uses the appropriate algorithm.  Regards,  David

An excellent travel lens. I use mine quite a bit. It can even be used
for light duty close-up work. It has many features normally found on
more expensive lenses, including a lens mount seal, AF-S autofocusing,
and VR II. It will be difficult to find a lens that is more useful for
general snapshooting, backpacking, or travel.

Barrel and pincushion distortion are there, but a little bit less than
what I would expect for a lens with such an extreme zoom range.

Obviously, the lens is no substitute for, say, the 70-200mm VR,
possibly one of the sharpest zooms in Nikon's lineup, or the 12-24mm
zoom. But it is almost as sharp as either one of these lenses. What you
get in convenience you pay for with some distortion. I think the 18-200
is worth every penny.

This lens has no tripod mount, but it is probably not needed in such a
lightweight lens.

A few nits:
The lens hood falls off too easily.
The zoom ring sticks a little bit in the middle, not unlike the 18-70mm
kit lens.

I too find it an excellent choice. I got one before we went to Europe
this year and enjoyed it greatly. It was very nice to walk around with
just that lens on the camera (D2x), a few memeory cards in the pockets.
When I'm shooting an assignment I will still use my pro lenses, 17-25,
35-70 and 70-200, but I can also see times when in a rapidly changing
environment, that even the 18-200 could fill a need.

I found the pictures very good, the sharpness is there and the
distortion is not to bad. I wouldn't use it for architectual photography.
Being able to use it for a large number of situations is great. The VR
worked great. I got some good shots of artwork in galleries with a
Shutter speed as lof a 1/8s at about 35mm.

The only problem I had is after about 4 weeks the VR unit freaked out. I
took it to the Nikon Repair shop in El Segundo and they fixed it and had
it back to me in 5 days. The replace the VR Unit and AF unit and
calibrated the lens. SO far it's been fine.
