Few questions on evolt e-500

Just picked up a e-volt e-500. Nice so far. Once my CF arrives, I can
actually start using it. :-D

Few questions came up:

1. I can't upgrade the camera firmware.  I've tried every setting on
the Computer Connection to the computer (Storage, control, etc),
however Olympus Master says no camera detected. Is that due to the
lack of a storage device in the camera? I guess I'll learn later today
when the CF arrives.

2. I put the Olympus Master software on my laptop and home computer.
Installed fine on the laptop, upgraded the software, no problem. Home
computer is Vista. Won't upgrade the software. IIRC, the error is
Unable To Install Software. Cannot upgrade firmware either.

3. What's the conversion for the lenses to 35mm equivalent? For
example, I read in another post here that the Zuiko 14-45mm = 28-90mm.
So is it double? is my 50 - 150 100-300 mm?

Thanks!

Got the CF (Microdrive). Still laptop cannot detect camera. Sometimes
it takes a little longer to pop up the cannot detect camera.

Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks.

I don't have an Oly so I don't speak from experience.  Perhaps your
problem is that you need to install drivers for your camera.  If your
PC does not recognize the camera then you'll need to install the
drivers.

The crop factor for your camera is 2 (multiply the focal length of a
lens by 2).  A 35mm lens for a film camera is 70mm on your E500.

Nope. Have you read the manual? You shouldn't have a CF card installed when
doing the update, I've read it can cause problems. Also some people have
problems with firewalls blocking the update.. If you can't connect the
camera, it sounds like a problem with XP? I've had no issues updating
fireware using win2K or win98SE so can't coment on using XP.

This procedure is explained in detail here:

http://www.olympusamerica.com/e1/sup_firmwareupdates.asp

PRIOR TO INSTALLATION, PLEASE:

Step 1.
Update your OLYMPUS Master 1.x, Viewer or Studio version 1.x or above to the
latest version. While connected to the Internet, launch your current
OLYMPUS Master, Viewer of Studio software, select "Update Software" from
the Help menu or under "Online Service" (OLYMPUS Master), and follow the
on-screen instructions. Or, update your version via the software link here.

Step 2.
E-1: Go into Custom Menu 1 and set "PC Mode" to "Control." Remember to set
back to "Storage" after the firmware update has completed.
E-300: Go into Tools Menu 2 and set "PC Mode" to "Auto."
E-500: Go into Tools Menu 2 and set "USB Mode" to "Auto."

TO BEGIN FIRMWARE INSTALLATION (ONCE STEPS 1&2 ABOVE ARE COMPLETE):

Step 1. For Viewer 1.1 (or above) or Studio 1.1 (or above) open your
software and go to Help/Update Firmware. For OLYMPUS Master 1.2 (or above)
open your software and choose "Browse Images". Next choose "Online Service"
then "Update Camera."

Step 2. Follow the on-screen instructions. After connecting to the USB
cable:
E-300: Select "PC" and press the "OK" button.
E-500: Select "Storage" and press the "OK" button.

Select the available update you wish to download and click "Details" for
more information or "Update" to install.

Step 3. Review the License Agreement and click "Agree". Then follow the
online instructions.

Step 4. Once you are notified that the firmware installation is successful,
you can install further firmware updates that may be available - for
accessories such as lenses, flashes, etc. - or begin to enjoy the benefits
of your recent update.

Yeah just found that. Tried it, still no go. Camera is recognized by
my PC, AFAICT, as I can browse to the 'drive' and get my pictures.

What ver USB is your notebook, and do you keep it upgraded firmware and
software wise?

I plug in my E500 then turn it on in the "AUTO" mode, then select storage
from the screen on the camera.

From then on I just run their program. When in their program I select the
camera in the firmware screen and select check for upgrades and follow the
instructions, similar to upgrading the software.

Yep, has the latest BIOS. It's a dell inspron.

As for the lates USB Drivers - I'm not entirely sure. All USB drivers
appear to be Driver Version 5.1.2600 2180, dated 7/1/2001.

I didn't see any USB updates on Dell's site. Is there another place I
could check?

Unlucky me :(

I'll try a reinstall of the software and all tonight

Hmmm, sounds like you might be running USB ver 1??

Is that possible?

Dbl check Oly's site, seems I remember that there was some fix for the
Master program, then install the upgrade.

BTW I am running the Master Plus, and it does what it is supposed to, but I
would recommend geting RSE while it is still available. Works much faster
and has really great features. They're updated it for the E500 and others.

I'm running XP and have had no problems. I have also had no problems when
upgrading firmware with a CF card in it. I have a 1 gig XD and CF in mine
at all times.
