Do I have to install the (ugh) Nikon software again just to view this file?

Never mind, Google edumacated me. Maybe I should finish reading that owner's
manual.

That would be NEF, no? You really don't what to be using the limited raw
conversion controls in the supplied software. A free good converter is
Pixmantec's RawShooter Essentials.

NDF files are dust reference files which can be used with Nikon Capture
to automatically reduce dust spots.
