Hi Group,

An newbie question about lens.

Finally after alot of thinking I have decided to upgrade from my Nikon
APS Proena 600i to digital.  I wil buy a Canon EOS 350D camera instead
of the Nikon D50 / D70.

I need to replace all the IX Nikkor lens - either if I went for Canon
or Nikon.

However, I have a Nikkor AF ED 70-300mm f/4-f/5.6D lens.  That would
fit the Nikon D50 / D70.

Can I use this Nikkor AF ED 70-300mm f/4-f/5.6D on the Canon EOS 350D
body?

Do I need any adaptors?

Thanks

Mark.

I must admit to not being familiar with the IX line of lenses.
Are they something other than the standard Nikon mount?

I'm not a Canon user (I have the Nikon D70, FWIW), but I believe
that with the proper adaptor you can mount and use this lens on a Canon,
with certain caveats:

1)    You'll probably have to focus manually.

2)    You'll almost certainly have to meter separately and set the
lens aperture and the shutter speed  manually.

3)    I'm not sure whether you will be able to focus to infinity.

> Do I need any adaptors?

Absolutely.  The Nikon lens mount is not directly
interchangeable with the Canon one.  You can't use the Canon lens on a
Nikon body simply because the distance from mount to sensor is greater
on the Nikon, so you can't focus anything beyond rather close given the
extension of any imaginable adaptor in that direction (thus such
adaptors are not commonly made.)

    Good Luck,
        DoN.

nikon lenses usually fit all nikon cameras albeit with varying degrees of
functionality disabled.  as for aps glass that would be ideal providing the
mount is the same as the standard 35mm and digital formats.  I don't know
the quality of aps glass.  If it does not fit a nikon digital with full
compatibility then you would probably be better off starting from scratch.
As for fitting nikons to canon, i don't think canon themselves make an
adaptor.  Even if they did this rather unique aps mount lens may still not
fit.  Unless this lens was of exceptional optical quality- which i beleive
to be unlikely it simply isn't worth the effort and price of keeping.  Its
2nd hand value is mostly likely very low as aps slr film photography never
caught on.  Check out ebay anyway.

If you prefer canon digital to nikon then go for proper canon glass.  35mm
film lenses will work very well.  I would look for decent 2nd hand rather
than new 3rd party stuff.
