I just got my hands on this beautiful lens, but have a question about one of
the rings.
There is a ring on the lens that adjusts to 3m-M, FULL, Infinity-3m and
Infinity to 5m. What is this for? The only thing I can think of is to
limit the focus to speed up the autofocus process when you know you will not
be using the lens closer than 3m or 5m, and to allow you to focus a bit
closer in manual mode.
I think this lens has been used twice, and I traded some work for it. It
seems to get good reviews on the Net. Any comments?
I'm using it on a D-70. I was using an old 80~200 AI lens, so while it
worked fine it doesn't couple to the meter and does not autofocus.and is
4.5.
Thanks.

That is the reason.

I have had the first AF version of this lens without tripod collar for
+15 years and it has served as my workhorse portrait lens depite having
others like the 85f1.8 and 105f2.8 and 180f2.8. It covers all these
ranges and the small loss of contrast and resolution never really
bothered me. Very high quality construction and optically very very
good. It is just a bit heavy for me and I would have preferred the
version with collar. I did damage it once when I dropped it on its
front element. :(( Fortunately, I had a UV filter on and there was no
optical damage. The damage that was done was to the gears inside which
had to be replaced.

I've saved a lot of lenses with a filter and a lens hood. Cheap insurance.
I have a lot of bent hoods and broken filters but no broken lenses. I toss
the caps and just use the filter/hood combo now.

You thought right.

Excellent lens - I used to have one, but now I have the newer 70-200mm
VR version.

You'll be happy.
