Well, I am a rank amateur to DSLR photography too, and I have found this
book to be very helpful.
"Digital SLR cameras & photography for dummies". Authored by David D.
Busch.
The book is well written and explained in terms that I found to be easily
understood. I have used this book in conjunction with the Canon eos
instruction manual with great success.
To me, this book was a wonderful discovery, and well worth every penny.
Hope this helps,
Charles

I'm not familiar with that particular title myself, but Dave Busch can be
relied upon to put out a worthwhile book. I have his "Mastering Digital SLR
Photography" and also his "Nikon D70 Digital Field Guide," and both are very
good indeed. I don't think anyone will go wrong by getting one of his books.

As a rank amateur myself, I found "Mastering Digital SLR Photography" a good
read. When I bought it, Amazon.com also recommended "Understanding
Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. In a weak moment I decided to get both and
have never regretted it. "Understanding Exposure" is practical, easy to
read and will definitely encourage you off the Auto setting. Highly
recommended.

I liked Andy Rouse's book "Digital SLR Masterclass".
Not just about camera/lens stuff but software and so on too.

Thanks for your suggestions.
I was in a hurry however and had to order before I got any replies
here, so I'm getting "The digital SLR handbook" by Michael Freeman, and
"Canon EOS digital rebel XT/350D" by Michael Guncheon. They both seemed
to fit my request based on the Amazon feedback they got.
The latter is apparently a "replacement user manual" that is far better
than the "leaflet" that came with the camera, so that should take care
of understanding my specific camera. The other one will hopefully teach
me about the actual photography technique from a beginner's perspective
willing to grow beyond that and learn more.
Anyone have these books?
