D2xs?

Nikon has announced a replacement for the D2x, the D2xs. DPreview says
the upgrades are minor, but include a larger LCD screen and a better
autofocus system. As I recall, the autofocus system was the biggest
source of complaints about the D2x. There are a bunch of other
refinements, including better organized menus and a more versatile
function button, longer battery life, and faster storage.

Still the same CMOS sensor, but the high speed crop is now
electronically masked.

Seems like it would've been bigger news if they'd simply lopped $500 off the
list price of a D2X to make it a little more competitive.

What can be more competitive than $4399.95 and a $500 Nikon cash back
rebate?  With a dirt cheap price like that it doesn't pay for the people
waiting for a D200 or the 5D to not buy the D2x instead.

Two D200s at $3400 or one 5D at $2500 before rebate ($300).

Why wait for either of the above?  A number of stores have the D200 in stock
at any given time (only takes a few minutes to find them on the Internet).
Heck, when I bought my D200 a few months ago, I just walked into my local
camera store, played around with it a little, and bought it...no lists, no
wait, I didn't even phone ahead.  I didn't know there was ever a shortage on
the 5D (but then I don't follow Canon news very closely except to know that
I wish Nikon would come out with a camera just like it and at the same price
point).

It was not that easy in Germany, we had to wait for some weeks. But we,
too, decided to go for the D200 instead of the D2x, that was planned
before, due to the huge price difference.

I know my experience was atypical.  ;-)  There ARE benefits to living in a
small town.  After the initial order (Dec.) came in, my local store was
getting 'em faster than they could sell them.  Occasionally, I see people
complaining that they can't find a D200...always seems like a check of about
10 online reputable camera stores will turn up some in stock at any given
moment.

Well, apparently they did reduce the price. Personally, I think the
price should be dropped at least $2000.

Some reviewers (Thom Hogan, for instance) say that Nikon will also
release a firmware upgrade for the D2x to give it all the non-hardware
features of the D2xs.
