I have an opportunity to return my Canon Digital Rebel in exchange for the
Rebel XT. New software and 8mp vs. 6.1. But.....my telephoto lens I use on
the Rebel is an AF 70-300mm, which serves me well. And I have now taken
10,000 shots with the rebel since Dec. 04. Sounds like a good deal for a 1
for 1 exchange. But is it?

Why wouldn't it be? You can use the same lens on both, can't you?

Probably a good deal, but buy yourself the battery pack that goes on
the bottom of the camera and allow you to use two batteries for longer
life. You don't need the longer life, you need the size. The XT is
really small. Without some sort of extension, your bottom two fingers
have no place to go and it feels a little awkward.

Absolutely. The RebXT is smaller, which may not appeal to you. The
battery size is still plenty - if you're not using an IS lens or a flash,
you'll probably need 8 gigs of CF cards for every battery. If you use IS
lenses or the on-board flash, then you will see a detriment to your battery
life.
Other than those two considerations, the RebXT blows away the Rebel in
every regard. Between the faster startup time, faster burst, E-TTL II,
raw+jpg support, larger buffer, faster CF performance, faster image
processing, FEC, greater control over Av flash behavior, and other features,
it's a no-brainer.

First check the store's return policy. Both Sam's and Costco offer returns
on electronics for an unlimited time. Secondly, know the store manager in
the photo store where you bought the telephoto lens, and make an even
exchange: Canon lens for Nikon lens. Keep all receipts and all boxes.
