Hi there
any suggestion about a new zoom to carry out toghether the included 18-55
lens kit?
I have a Pentax *ist DL and like to buy something like 70-200 or 70-300...
I considered two different budgets:
BIG budget for real GOOD lens (BIG budget is 600$ for me!)
* SIGMA 70-200 2.8 APO
MIDDLE budget (300$)
* SIGMA APO 70-300 4/5.6
* Pentax 75-300
* ... a lot of others
I'm not sure about "the more I pay the more I get"... so am not sure about
whether 2 budgets I have to choose. I saw very good picture with unexpensive
lens too.
Thx for your experiences.

First thing to be addressed is what do you wish to do with the additional
lens? Do you need the mm's? Do you need the wider aperture? Do you need VR?

Easily the most logical choice in the cheaper category is the Pentax
DA50-200. Looks like a twin brother to the 18-55, costs around $200
with the rebate Pentax is offering (see their web site), and is as sharp
as anything else in its class. If you decide you really need to reach
to 300, get a 1.4 or 1.5 teleconverter; total cost is still under $300.

I paid a bit more and got the Sigma 70-300mm DG APO and have been very
pleased with it using my Pentax DS.

Formally the complementary lens to any of the
major makers' 18-55mm is their unjustly overlooked
55-18mm lens.

You'll likely appreciate the extra reach of the 70-300s but I saw a
test recently (with them and then a good lens, the Olympus
50-200 which acts like a 100-400 on Olympus 4/3rds systems) and the
Olympus literally slaughted the cheap ones when it came
to resolution. The difference was so graphic you could easily see it
in a magazine's tiny reproduction. But the big question is, can a
really good 70-200 match a 70-300 when it comes to printing a picture
at the same size, given fewer pixels will be in any given
area of the 200mm shots. From what I saw in the test, yes, if that
high end lens is really that much better. Plus, you do get an extra
stop. What I would do is go to a store (if possible) and test them out
with your camera body. It's the only way to be sure.

Go to eBay and look around. After I bought my DS I caught lens fever and
before long had bought FOUR (yes FOUR) lenses of that type... 2 by
Pentax, 1 Tamron and 1 Quantaray (Sigma). All were rather cheap, and
each has different characteristics which I appreciate. The Tamron is
incredibly short, the Sigma is light but very sharp (though zooming
requires re-focus), one Pentax has internal zoom and is very light but
soft in corners, the other is far longer and heavier, but sharper.
None cost more than $50, including shipping. All four are worth the
money, and dropping or losing any one of them would _not_ give me a
heart-attack.
eBay has equipped my Pentax with usable glass from 16 to 500mm.
Lenses don't take photos... photographers do.

Great experience.
"lens fever".... that's what it is! I should have it too!
I read a lot of reviews and saw so many samples... but I haven't found yet
nothing really the "best".
Maybe the Tamron 24-135 should be one, for "all pourpose".
But what about 70-300?
My goal is to walk around with 2 lens, no more. One for wide and portait
(covered by 18-55) and one tele. I'm looking for the second one. May I know
your Sigma model?
You wrote: "Sigma is light but very sharp"... why did you say "but"? Is
"sharp" a disadvantage?

It is a Quantaray, the private label of the USA Ritz Camera stores but I
think actually made by Sigma. I don't know what the original Sigma label
is, but it is 70~210mm and has an "A" lens mount.

Not at all. I hadn't expected much from this lens, but the quality
surprised me.
