I see varying opinions on whether non i-ttl flashes like the NIKON
SB-50DX will work and be usable (maybe two different things) on the
Nikon D50.

Is that model(and other non i-ttl flashes) usable on the D50? Is it
even worth trying.

What do you give up (if not using i-ttl) if it does "work"?

They work, you just can't use any kind of TTL metering.  You can use
full manual mode, and if the flash has an auto mode where it uses its
own sensor to control exposure, that should work as well.
