Apparently, the wear on equipment originally designed for the Eurpean
theatre of operations is horrific.  Things (mechanical) break down in
1/3 the time.

Saw clouds of dust like that while living in Arizona, several times.  Leaves
quite a mess in the swimming pool.  But at least you don't have to worry
about snipers while cleaning up.
