The 7D price dropped in Australia as well a few weeks ago as well. I picked
one up and am happy with it. Sony are being tight lipped. I have read a few
things about what they may or may not do. One was that they want 20% of the
digital SLR market. Another is that they will have the first model out in
summer 2006 (northern hemisphere). The one I like most is the comment from
the editor in the current edition of Camera Australia that says Carl Zeiss
will be making lenses for the Minolta AF mount Sony D-SLR. I think I might
wait a while before looking at new lenses now.............

Same here, although I went for the slightly lighter 5D. It is amazing
what Minolta has done here, especially considering the price point.
This might be your last chance, because Sony still hasn't come out with
a statement of what they want to do...

This may or may not be a blessing. If Sony manufacture the CZ lens
design, then manufacturing will be suspect. If CZ manufacture the Sony
specified CZ design then the prices may be hard to swallow.
Many are of the opinion that the bodies Sony will produce will be
"plastic fantastic" and not serious SLR's. Remains to be seen. I hope
they do a Maxxum 9 class DSLR. That would be a serious statement.
Cheers,
Alan

I fully agree that the whole affair is one huge grey area.
I had been looking at getting the 7D D-SLR from when it was released, but
had always had the dream of what could be with the release of the 9D. All
of a sudden the 7D was more reasonably priced. There are millions of
photographers who will be watching how this sell off will affect the
business. And not just the Minolta fans. In the end I hope Sony realise that
photography lovers are expecting more than the "plastic fantastic". It's an
ugly thought that a brand name like Minolta could be relegated to the
supermarket shelves only, and to never more be considered at least a serious
contender.
All the best
