Hi,
i have a Nikon D70s with the standard 18-70 lens. i am planning to buy
a new lens and i love the  Nikn 70-200 f/2.8 VR lens. But it is too
expensive for me at this stage.
Could you recommend any other lens (Sigma / Tamron or Nikkor itself)
within the same range (70 - 210 , or more) which need not necessarly
have a constant aperture at a cheaper price, but which can provide
comparably good quality pictures.

Thanks,
Anirudh

I think you just said it - the Nikon 70-210 f/4-5.6 D is a great lense
with excellent optics. It's not made anymore, and you'll have to find it
used, but you won't find anything to match it from any vendor at 2-3x
the price.

It's one of the Nikon price/performance gems.

The only issue is it uses the older push-pull style of zooming. I think
Nikon should make a rotating barrel version today.

:-)

If you don't mind stopping down a notch, have a look at the Nikon 70-300
f/4-5.6 D ED lense. It's not quite up to the others mentioned above, but
it has surprisingly good optics for the price and reaches out to 300mm.
You'll want a tripod at that zoom range, unless it's a sunny day.

The Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 is supposed to be quite good also.

The 75-300mm f/4-5.6 AF-D ED Nikkor performs very well in the 70-200mm
range but less well in the 200-300mm range.

Avoid the cheaper 75-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Nikkor which lacks the ED glass
and has inferior performance.

If you can get along without AF for a while the Tokina 80-200/2.8
lenses are an excellent value, selling for just a bit over $200.

Consider a used Nikkor 70-210 F4-5.6 D.  Ebay or http://www.keh.com are nice
places to start your search.

The 70(80)-200 f2.8 lenses are all quite good, no matter Nikon, Sigma,
Tamron, Tokina, just stay away from some of the off-off brands. Nikon
made a 70-210 f4 lens in the 80s and early 90s, it is also quite a good
performer (better than the f4.5-5.6 by most reviews). On the otherhand
its AF is not as refined, mine is slightly noisy, but a sharp lens.
Best thing is they can be found for under $300. Used lenses in good
shape are generally good buys.
