I'm looking for a bag recommendation for:
* Canon 5D
* Canon 70-200 2.8 IS (about 7.7" long high preference for it being
attached to the camera)
* Sigma 24-70 2.8 (about 4.5" long)
* Just a few knick-knacks, including a 1.4x extender, and a 580 flash
(not required)
Most of the bags I've looked at either don't fit the camera with the
long lens attached (and without stressing the camera mount), or they
do, and are otherwise massive bags. Ideally, I'd like the bag to be as
small as possible, and I'd _really_ like it to be a smallish backpack.
Honestly, if it came down to it, I could ditch the wide lens if I could
find a bag that could nicely fit the canon and 70-200, but all of the
"single" bags I've seen so far are only designed to fit kit-sized (3.5"
long or so) lenses. Currently, I've got a nice little backpack, but it
doesn't fit the camera with the lens attached.
Cost isn't a factor, and a nice bag would actually be a good thing.
Thanks for any help.

Look at the Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW.
I have the Lowepro Slingshot 100 AW. I like mine except that I wish I had
bought the 200 AW instead.

Funny coincidence. That is actually the bag I have now (the 200 AW).
I like it a lot, but can't fit the camera in the bag with the 70-200
lens attached, unless I do funny things internally on the bag. It
doesn't fit at all with the camera going in the side of the bag as
intended.
So far, it has been my best choice though.

Try the LowePro Mini Trekker AW (backpack) as it has lots of room and does
hold the 70-200mm without any problems. I have mine loaded and it's great.

I use the LowePro Micro Trekker 100 to carry my D70S with the Nikon
80-400 VR telephoto zoom plus four other lenses comfortably. It's
quite small and handy, and very comfortable on the back.

For motorcycle trips when I don't want to lug all that, I put the
18-200 VR lens on the camera and put in the LowePro Top Load Zoom 1:

Pretty happy with both of them!

What he has, with same kit as you. I've even squozed two bodies in with
the 70-200 mounted, but don't recommend that.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like Lowepro has a lot of mindshare here.
I'll take a look at these suggestions. I might even try the
computrekker, as if I can fit my laptop in there and get rid of another
bag, I can justify the larger backpack.
Thanks again.

If you also want to carry your laptop then have a look at the Kata R-103.

Since I bought a Domke F2, I've all but quit using my mini trekker backpack.
My F100/D70/F3HP can be mounted to my 80-200 f2.8 and put into the bag. You
may have to adjust the straps to make room for the body while still closing
the bag securely, but it works.

I have the Lowepro microtrekker 200. It fits the my camera with a
70-300 lens on it and a smaller lens beneath it and has room on the
sides for other stuff.

I use a narrow internal frame day pack, they make them narrow for rock
climbing for full arm movement and it's nice to have a bit of a soft
padded frame & proper straps to carry some weight on long hikes.
For example:
http://www.rei.com/category/4500509.htm?vcat=REI_SSHP_CAMPING_TOC
Not tiny but the narrow shape is easily stowed & it has to be a certain
size to be able to strap on & hold weight correctly. It's no problem
holding a 7-200 2.8 with teleconverter & body and a few other good sized
lenses. Just barely room for lunch & a small jacket with water in the
outside pockets & by then it's pretty heavy. Less than 2-feet tall &
about 1 foot wide.

Sure makes me glad I don't own a Canon if I had to worry about a camer
bagstressing the lens mount! :) Kidding of course. But really
think about what youjust said.. a nylon and fabric bag, stressing a lens mount! My 80-20
F.28 Nikon causes a lot more stress on a lens mount than any camera ba
period. The same would be true of a Canon.

I've got a Lowepro backpack that would work. You can move the dividers
around in the pack so it will easily fit a body with a long lens on it. You
can even pull all the dividers out if you want.

Drew, I have a Roots backpack that I really like. Model CS12, Roots Mini
System Backpack. URL is:
http://www.gentec-intl.com/Default.asp?mode=prd&div_id=&prod_id=CS12
I use a D70 and it fits just fine. I think the 5D is about the same height,
4.4". This pack may be a bit big for what you want, you'll have a bit of
space to spare in there with your kit, but they may have a smaller one in
their lineup too if you want to go maximally minimal ;-) . I really like the
fact that it is from Roots and so does not automatically indicate a camera
bag. I'm 6'4" tall and find the fit great for long outings. YMMV.
Good luck,
Rolf.

Depends on how you want to carry it.
Backpack or side bag?
How about a Crumpler Long Schlong? Think that would do it for a small side
bag....or others have recommended Lowe backpacks...they are superb.

I thought you were being amusing, but there are tons of places to buy a
long schlong in the UK. So, I take it, schlong is not a double entendre
in GB?

Whoops! Not heard of that one. They are Aussie bags so anything is possible!
The Crumpler website is very funny!!
