I inquired about the lack of hyperfocal marks on modern Olympus lenses
on another group.

A bit erroneous (the lens / film resolution part) and substantially
incomplete:

DOF calculation primarily relates to the size at which the image will be
printed from a given film format.  DOF markings on lenses are typically
for an 8x10 - 8x12 print.  They are meaningless for a 4x6 print (more
DOF) and for a 16 x 24 print (less DOF).

For that matter, a 1.6x cropped sensor using FF lenses and their
markings will produce less DOF than the marking indicates when blown up
to the "typical" reference size.
