Current camera:  Canon D30 (the original first generation dslr)

Current wide angle lens: Canon 20-35mm f3.5-4.5

Problem: I want wide angle capability down to about the equivalent of a 24mm
lens in 35mm format.

Purpose: My principal use of a camera is for vacation snapshots for personal
use i.e., "record" photographs, not art.

Note: Cost is not a big constraint but I don't usually buy things I don't
need.  I used an Olympus OM1 and a Rollei 35s for over 20 years until I
bought the D30 - I missed the whole automatic film camera era!  I am
satisfied with the quality of photographs produced by the D30 and 20-35mm
lens. If I could buy a wider angle lens for the D30, that is what I would do
but of course, nobody makes one.

Option 1:  Buy a Digital Rebel or a 30D plus a Canon 10-22mm f3.5-4.5 lens
(or a 3rd party lens).

Option 2:  Buy a Canon 5D.

I am leaning toward the 5D for a couple of practical reasons not directly
related to image quality; there will be the weight of one less lens to carry
around and fewer lens changes will be required.  In addition to the Canon
20-35mm f3.5-4.5, I also travel with and use a Canon 28-135mm f3.5-f5.6 IS
and a Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 IS.  I guess the D30 might still have some
limited use with the long lens because of its 1.6 sensor factor but I
probably would not bother to lug around an extra body just for that.

Are there any important considerations I am missing in my assessment?

You do have other ultra wide angle choices for the D30:

I think only Canon uses EF-S mount.

Thanks, I forgot about the Sigma, Tokina and Tamron.  Based on comments I
have seen about build quality, I guess I would avoid Sigma, fairly or
unfairly, because of its reputation.  Tokina is not sold in Canada and so I
would have to mail-order from another country and would have no local
service.  Tamron is sold here but from what I have read, the Tamron 11-18mm
has a few minor mechanical design drawbacks compared to Canon wide angle
lens; there is also a small gap in the coverage range with my Canon 20-35mm
lens.

The Sigma 10-20mm is an EX lens.  Those are manufactured to higher
standards than "standard" Sigma lenses.  I've only had the lens for
some weeks, but I'd say the build quality, as well as the optical
quality, is excellent.  At least check it out in a local shop.

Here's some pointers to recent shots taken with this lens:

these pictures are 1. too small to judge quality of lens used 2.
oversharpened. I'm not saying than Sigma is bad lens (I do not know),
but some different pictures are needed to demonstrate it.

ultrawide angles although ef not ef-s i still designed for small format
sensors.  you will find massive vignetting on a full frame system.  Maybe
not an issue with the old d30.

You seem to have taken most everything into consideration. You seem to
know what the different factors are. Let me just say that if you go
option 1, avoid the XT and just get the 30D. You'll be glad you did.

Let me say that if you go for option 2, consider the 24-70 2.8L (or
24-105 4.0L IS) as an "always on" lens. You'll be glad you did.

This is the one I'll recommend since you stated that vacation shots and
personal use are your main uses.  I'll add that the 30D is a lot more camera
than the DR; but both will work fine.
