Does the Adobe Elements software edit the NEF file format out of the D50?
Would this be the better way to go over the Nikon editing software?

PSE3 and 4 with ACR 3.2 or later support the D50 raw format. However, so
does Raw Shooter Essentials which is a free converter.

What editing do you have in mind? And do you mean the free software with
the camera Picture Project or Nikon Capture? I always thought PP had a
brain dead interface and only had it loaded for less than 3 min. I've used
Capture for a while, but moved to PSE3 and RSE.

Simple answer: yes and yes.
WIth Elements, should you be so inclined (and you should), you can learn to
use color management as well as very sophisticated image
manipulation/finsihing. Combine this with a decent (meaning upper end Epson)
printer and you might be amazed at the quality of images you can eventually
produce.
Pixmantec et al converters, including the Nikon raw converter, still require
final image processing in Elements/Photoshop anyway for the most part. The
Pixmantec raw converter, especially the one you pay for, is very good (I use
it alot) but I would concentrate on learning Elements and color management.
