All you wise pedants out there - can you tell me how to avoid top posting
when I start a thread? Would it make you feel a lot better if I would put
some crap above the text?
Rudy Benner - 16 Mar 2006 20:44 GMT
This is top posting.

Why don't you get a hobby - something to fill the long lonely hours when
obviously you have nothing better to do.

I could have sworn that I once read a post from another David J Taylor that
informed me that posts about posts were never off topic - but I could be
wrong, and I don't like swearing :)

But then - how about posts about off-topic posts - are those off-topic?

Only when bottom posted.
Zeke - 16 Mar 2006 21:45 GMT
But, as usual when the posting debates start, the original issue remains
unanswered. So back to reality: How to avoid top-posting when starting a
thread? Is the first line on top of nothing or second to nothing?

Just don't put the little das-dash-space first (like I just did) & it'll
be ok.

That depends if it's done on a Mac or a PC - personally I think it's far
better done on a PC, but not if you're a christian (oops, sorry - didn't
mean to bring religion into this debate!) :)

So what's your point? When you say "if you're a christian" what is that?
"Christian" as opposed to what?

Ah. Dites-donc!

But he is amusing. I like amusing trolls, have no use for the other kind.

And, we responded.....

Don't post idiotic statements like that and you'll avoid the problem
quite handilly.

Glad I could help.

So sad - you don't understand a bit. I'll try to explain myself:

Some newsgroups have a "culture" of paying more attention to the form than
the contents of messages. When someone without experience of newsgroups try
to post a question it will be answered with:
- RTFM, idiot!
- This is off-topic!
- Don't top post in this group
This is quite disencouraging for newcomers, so it would be nice if
experienced newsgroup users could be a bit more generous. That's my point.
Was it to hidden for you?

I just saw it as a bit of irritating trollery.  Still do.

This group generally stays on topic with little sidebar discussions on
form, usually instigated by people complaining about top posting and
excessively long sigs, esp. those without "--" so that the sigs re
removed in replies.

Both are irritating behaviour, but lesser sins than raising a ruckus for
the sake of raising a ruckus which is truly sad behaviour.

I took it as being a light-hearted troll for a bit of fun - don't tell me he
was serious?
