Hi,

I have a Canon 20D and was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a lens
that would be ideal to photograph at an airshow.

Thanks for any and all help.

The Ideal Lens.  Is this like the Ideal Gas?

> to photograph at an airshow.

If you are close to the subjects, a wide angle lens.

If you are far away from the subjects, a telephoto.

A Bigma will do very well for airshow both in air and static display
shots.

Second the Bigma vote - I have a Sigma 50~500 for my Minolta Maxxum 7D and
am completely tickled with it.  Other than that Popeye forearm thing I'm
developing...  ;^)

I'm using a D-70 which needs 5.6 for the metering to work.
I do have an *old* AF 75 to 300 and all of the automated features work
http://www.rogerhalstead.com/jets.htm

What I'd really like is that 50 to 500 at f 5.6 and IS, or in
Nikon's case, "VR". Unfortunately that probably put the price beyond
what I've paid for my entire set of cameras and lenses.

VR, or IS is very handy for air show work and high shutter speeds as
has been pointed out is not the way to go with older aircraft.

as long as you can comfortably hand hold and preferably IS.  300mm minimum.

I purchased the "L" series 80-200 for that purpose and combine it with a
1.4x extender.  I think I would have been happier with the Canon 70-300 IS
lens.

The thing with airshows is that you want to be able to shoot at slow enough
shutter speeds to blur the propellers.  IS really helps.  Also, IS helps you
increase exposure so the underside of aircraft on the fly-by circuit isn't
terribly underexposed.
