Thanks for everyone's advice on weather to go with the Nikon D50/ D70
or Canon Rebel XT.
I decided to go with the Nikon.  It just had a better more solid feel.
The D50 was the model I chose as an entry level.  I liked the Tamaron
18-200mm as my lense.  Any pro's or con's on that combination would be
appreciated.

Now I have to find the best price for that package.  I didn't find much
difference among the various camera stores in the Los Angeles area, all
hovering around the $1,000 range.  I was amazed though at some prices
on line.  Here the body alone was like around $599.  I found it on line
thru CCI Camera City out of NY for $279!  That's a big savings.
Anything I should be leary about buying camera equipment via the mail
etc.?  Thanks in advance.

Check CCI in reseller ratings.

Total dissastifaction with this vendor! If prices appear too good to
be true, it is because they are. After the order was placed, they sean
an email requesting call to "confirm" the online order and try to sell
you additonal items that are normally included. They are cheating the
public. I would recommend doing business elsewhere.

If you like being ripped off do buy from them.

I'm sure they will screw you over really good.

If the price seems too good, it probably is.
The D50 is a good choice, but the all focal length zoom are generally
of poor quality, slow, I'd recommend getting two lenses to cover the
range. The Nikon 18-70 kit lens has a decent reputation, then the Nikon
70-210 4.5-5.6 is an OK lens. Better still a Tamron, or Tokina f2.8
zoom of similar focal length. Also check out the Nikon 18-200 a lot of
folks seem to like it. But generally the 12x zooms have terrible
ratings.

That sounds about right for OTC retail.

Oooooo!  Wow!  That IS a big savings!   [feigned enthusiasm]

Well, the price you got sounds too good to be true.  By now, you know the rest
of the old saying.

B&H Photo lists the body only for $509.95.  Having patronized them numerous
times (all on-line orders) with NOT ONE issue, I'd buy from them in a
heartbeat.

Ask CCI Camera City if their price includes the battery, body cap, strap,
manuals, etc., etc.  I'll bet it doesn't.  John A. Stovall's reply was most
revealing (and, at the same time, annoying - with that GD sig!).   [ducking]

body $514.95 at Canoga Camera.  Of course you'd have tax on top of
that.

By now you've been told about checking out sellers at
www.resellerratings.com and how CCI is rated.  Some things that may interest
you:
1) www.overstock.com just got in refurbished D50 w/lens for about the same
price as you listed for legitimate new body only sales
2) some other good vendors (based on my experience) are:
  www.bhphotovideo.com
www.buydig.com & www.beachcamera.com (same company for both links)
  www.17photo.com
  www.calumetphoto.com
  www.normancamera.com
  www.onecall.com
  www.porters.com
Some people also swear by www.adorama.com, I've only ordered from them once
(a long time ago) and had a problem that took longer than I'd have liked to
resolve and it looks like their rating at www.resellerratings.com has
slipped a bit, but you may want to consider them.  I've also ordered from
www.focuscamera.com a few times without any problems, but it looks like my
experiences may not have been typical from them based on others' reports.
Also, Costco sells the D50.  So, check out everybody legitimate and take
your best deal...

Thanks George for the list. 17photo looks interesting.  Has a good
rating and reasonable price for the combo kit with both lenses.

Which lenses in that kit?
tophatrus@gmail.com - 13 Mar 2006 14:44 GMT
The lenses are 18-55 and 55-200.  From what I've read on this site,
sounds like the 55-200 is a "dog".
I'd like to get going this week with the purchase.  Now that I've
decided on the D50 body, just a matter of hooking up with the better
lenses.  I looked at a Tamaron 18-200.  It gives a great range, just
not sure about the quality I'd be getting with it.  Seems the more
research I do the more options I find.  Just as it should be I guess.
Watch I'll end up with a throw away 35mm. :)

The two lens kit is still probably considerably better than the tamron
17-200 though. That might be very reasonable if you aren't planning to
ever get $1,700 lenses or mess around with a bunch of old manual focus
primes.

The 18-55 is the best zoom in it's class. 55 at 1.5x=82.5mm full frame 35mm.
If you also need a true telezoom, I would look at the 75-300 or 80-200
offerings.

Unlike many here, I'm just an enthusiastic amateur.  I recently (past
six months) made the same decisions you're making now.  I bought the
Nikon D70s, and added the Nikon 18-70 and 55-200 zooms.  Very happy
with all three pieces, but made some money selling my film equipment,
heard about the Nikon 18-200, read lots of discussion of it pro/con,
went down to my local camera store and got on the waiting list, tried
out the owner's personal 18-200, and ended up buying one - new - on
eBay.

As an amateur, and someone who takes lots of photos on the road on
motorcycle trips, having just the one lens and not having to switch
back and forth is great.  I'm personally incapable of telling the
difference between shots taken at the same focal length with any of the
three lenses, but I also never blow my photos up to huge sizes - 8x10
is the largest I've ever gone.

I will say that the 18-200 is significantly heavier than either the
18-70 or the 55-200, but that hasn't kept me from leaving the two
lighter lenses at home most of the time since I got the 18-200.

Just more grist for the mill as you try to make your decision.  Good
luck, whatever you decide!

Whoops.  Sorry to respond to my own post.  All references to 18-70
should be 18-55.

I got my D50 from Cord Camera from one of their ebay "buy-it-now" auctions.
Great place to deal with.
tophatrus@gmail.com - 13 Mar 2006 14:48 GMT
Thanks Peter, I'll check out Cord Camera in a minute.  What lenses
would you recommend?  I'm told the Tamaron's are better than Sigma's.
I know Nikor is the real way to go, just how big a difference is there
in the image quality?

It's tough to argue with a Nikkor lens but there are some good third party
lenses.  Some may even be better than their Nikkor counterparts.  The only
problem with most Nikkor's comapred to third party lenses is the cost but
the investment seems to be worthwhile.

I do not yet have any Nikkor lenses.  I bought my D50 body only from Cord.
I purchased separately a Tokina 28-70mm AT-X lens.  I am very happy with it,
it's build-quality is second-to-none.  The image quality is very good.
Here's one I like taken with this lens
http://ntotrr.smugmug.com/photos/50519191-M.jpg

I was able to pick up to other lenses on the cheap via eBay - a Tamron
28-200mm and a Sigma 70-300mm APO.  The Tamron is for my wife to use when
she does the snapshots at family events, etc.  It's a fine lens considering
it cost me $ 69.00 and it is very compact, that's the main reason for
picking it up.  It has a long range for the snapshots it will be used for
and it works well http://ntotrr.smugmug.com/photos/58881883-M.jpg

The Sigma 70-300mm APO is the best bang-for-your buck long zoom.  It will
cost you less than $ 200.00, but make sure it is the APO version, the
non-APO version is adequate at best.  Here's one
http://ntotrr.smugmug.com/photos/59788546-M.jpg.

I have a Sigma DSLR so I've got a bit of experience with Sigma lenses.  Some
of their EX lenses are excellent, IMO.  I've got the 50mm EX macro, the
105mm EX macro, the 17-35mm EX, and the 24-70mm EX.  The 50mm and the 105mm
macros are very sharp.  This was taken with the 50mm EX macro, the 105 mm is
just as sharp http://ntotrr.smugmug.com/photos/9540650-M.jpg.  The 17-35mm
EX is good, not great.  The newer version being sold is supposedly better.
The 24-70mm EX is a great walk-around lens.  It hardly spends any time off
of my SD9.  It's a good choice for the D50, IMO and I would have bought one
except I couldn't spare the extra change so I went for the Tokina which was
much less.  Here's one taken with the 24-70mm EX
http://ntotrr.smugmug.com/photos/30824225-M.jpg.

I haven't ordered from the following, but I've read a lot of postings saying
good things about them:

www.robertsimaging.com
tophatrus@gmail.com - 14 Mar 2006 16:47 GMT
Thanks for that web site, (robertsimaging.com).  I'm narrowing the
list.  I decided on going with the D50 with the 18-70mm lense.  That
seemed to be a good way to go for entry level.

The Tamaron was a much more convenient lense but for roughly the same
price everyone told me the Nikon would be the best way to go by far.

I like my 18-70 plus another benefit of having a Nikon lens is resale value
if you don't like it...

Also pictureline.com and adorama.com.

Buydig is also selling refurbished D50s, in fact for the kit with the
Nikon lens, refurb is all they have. It seems a little early for their
to be so many refurbished D50s on the market.

It's called 'Bait and Switch'. They bait you with these super-low prices,
and when they have your attention, they make your life hell trying to get
you to pay for extras to bump up the price. Then, when you insist on having
the item at the advertised price, they suddenly state it is out of stock.
yeah, right!

Thanks.  I'm picking up a D50 with the 18-70mm next week.  Canoga
Camera is having a sale on that package and I just live about 20 miles
away.  It will be worth not having to hassle with anything.  Just drive
in and drive out.

Thanks for everyone's advice and thoughts.  Greatly appreciated.
