Mandates, rules, time limits. That's completly anti-photography

It works as motivation to try new approaches & discuss the results.
There are no winners or anything.

Apparently you've never shot professionally.

> Mandates, rules, time limits. That's completly anti-photography
Very little great photography has been produced without purpose.
In the real world there are limits regardless of how free spirited you
wish to be. Commercial photographers, art photographers, NatGeo and
other PJ photographers (to name very few) work within rather confining
limits that go beyond the mandate, rules (policy) and time and yet they
produce competent to stunning photography.
In the SI there is a mandate (given by participants, in turn) so that
everyone can (freely) interpret that mandate. If the mandate is "dogs"
and you submit a photo of a sunset, then you should be prepared to
defend the interpretation. That's up to you. The problem there is that
when people comment on your photo, if you've gone too far off the ranch,
you may not get comments/critiques that may be of value to you.
The SI has "rulz", not rules, so additional freedom of interpretation is
allowed. The rulz are simple, common sense and easy. At that, most of
the rulz have to do with procedure, not limitations on what you can do.
A time limit is there to set a pace. If there was no limit on time,
then like all other human endeavour, nothing useful would happen. As to
that there is usually a couple days grace for the slackers.
Of course discussing it and doing it are two different things, so I do
hope you participate in it and then you'll be able to understand why
there is a mandate, rulz and a timetable.
If you're into numbers, then the SI has resulted in over 1200 photos to
date from over 50 photographers of all skill levels and the images have
been viewed over half a million times. The SI itself has some vocal
critics as well, but they've made themsleves look ridiculous assailing
it and its participants.
Each SI mandate has produced very good to occasionaly great photos. But
they're produced by people who participate.
Not "anti-photography" at all.
Cheers,
Alan.

Hey, it keeps Ansel Adams OUT of the competition! That way I could have at
least a slim chance! <g>

OK, I'll give this a shot. I take it all the discussion is on
rec.photo.equipment.35mm, because I don't see any comments on the
photos themselves. I thought I read that [SI] was supposed to be in the
subject line, but I don't see any messages like that.
I assume it doesn't matter that I'm shooting digital (D70), not film.
And if I read correctly, all I do is email an 800px (max) shot to the
address on the RULZ site. Right?
