My thanks to all who responded to my post regarding RAW + Jpeg. I
downloaded the extractor and I am very pleased with the ability to
make adjustments using the PSE3 Plug-in. I have the zeal of the
convert and will now shoot only RAW with my beloved D70s.
I notice that when I save the .nef file in the .psd format, the size
triples (i.e., the original .nef = 5200kb; the .psd = 17,000 kb).
Is this normal and can anyone explain why this happens?
Thanks,
Alan

After conversion, the file has three color channels instead of one.
The PSD will get even larger if you use layers, and then Photoshop may
even add a preview to the file, making it larger still. It's all normal.

Yes it's normal. In fact this tells me you have only 8-bit data, which you
really don't want to do at this stage. In the raw converter pane look at
the lower left hand corner and you'll see a pull down menu for bit depth.
You really want 16 bits at this point. When you save this you'll then see
this is approximately now twice as large as before. Remember psd supports
much more things, especially layers.

I used to think so, too, but with Phase One RAW converter, I rarely need to
make any further adjustments, so 8 bits is good to go.

If you're outputting the final product, 8-bit can't really be bettered
in any practical way.

No, you want that for his book on color management.

Been there - done that too. Bottle of scotch numbs the pain nicely - only
problem is I now have to read the book again!
