Is there any way you can trap the technical shooting  data (in a
database for example) which is displayed on the images in single-image
playback?
Thanks

Yes. I'm not clear exactly what you want though. I review pics with
Irfanview and have that set up so that in full screen mode it shows
shutter speed, aperture, focal length & ISO in green text at the top of
the screen.

Options > Properties > Viewing tab...
Put this code in the box in the lower right with 'Show text' checked:
$F $E33434 f/$E33437 $E37378  ISO:$E2  EC:$E37380 $E37386

It's on the 'Fullscreen' tab in my version of Irfanview (3.97)

Thanks for your help. I use Adobe Photoshop album (don't know Irfanview
is it the software which comes with the camera? I did not install this)
for viewing my pics but I then store them on CD's if I wish to keep
them. I was interested in storing the information ( f stop etc )of
pictures I particularly like so that I will be better able to reproduce
the conditions. I envisaged this information being in a separate
databse with the photonumber/name as the identifier. Hope this makes
sense.

One thing I miss with my D70 compared to my CP-990 and 5700 is the ability
to have the camera write an info.txt file to the card along with the images
containing much of the exif info. For example:
DSCN3525.JPG
CAMERA       : E5700V1.1
METERING     : CENTER
MODE         : P
SHUTTER      : 1/707sec
APERTURE     : F7.3
EXP +/-      : 0.0
FOCAL LENGTH : f16.8mm(X1.0)
IMG ADJUST   : STANDARD
SENSITIVITY  : ISO100
WHITEBAL     : SPEEDLIGHT
SHARPNESS    : OFF
DATE         : 2005.04.23 13:58
QUALITY      : 2560x1920 FINE
SATURATION   : 0
FOCUS AREA   : CENTER

As for Irfanview, PC only, http://www.irfanview.com, great free software.
Make sure you get and install the plugins as well. With the exif plugin you
can view the exif info and copy to the clipboard and paste to another app.
I imagine other exif apps might be able to do this more automatically,
maybe even in batch mode. Maybe a user of exifer or exiftools can help.

You hit the nail on the head and it is exactly what I want to do. I
find quit often that others on these groups assume that one knows all
the technical info and they make you feel stupid for asking a simple
question. Your response was clear simple and helpful - thank you
