I am thinking about buying this camera:

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1188

Why this is 8 megapixel considerably cheaper than other 8 megapixel
cameras? Of course, lesser price is great, but it almost raises a red
flag that something about be wrong with the design.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I am also a little gun shy on buying another Olympus because I
purchased a simple 1.3 megapixel camera in 1998 that really crapped in
the past year or so.

thanks for anyone's help/thoughts/advice

It's not a DSLR so you'll get more replies in rec.photo.digital. The
widest view is 38mm, it's not particularly compact and lacks long zoom,
etc.

I find the camera intriguing also. Personally, I probably wouldn't rule
out Olympus because the old camera died. Digital cameras aren't like old
mechanical cameras which just keep working year after year. Your 1.3 mp
camera is an electronic consumer device ... think of how quickly we go
through walkmen, radios, and vcrs.

Because Olympus has taken the cheapo route to camera mfg. in order to
save itself.
But then Kodak rules this roost and it can't even make money....

Rich, this is a DSLR thread and Kodak was a great failure in that
market.

Canon seems to be making money and great cameras. My 5D will be here
Wednesday to go along with the 20D and 6 L lenses.

Nice metal bodies to.

They've failed in compact cameras too.  No one should be in a business
where they lose money.  Production does not = profit, just ask GM.

I agree.  Canon has great sense when it comes to this area.

My old film camera is over 25 years old.  It has a simple light meter
and if the battery dies, so what -- it keep working.  It was a
workhorse.  I gave it away and it is still being used.  The other
posters are correct.  They don't make digitals that good (yet) because
they are much more sensitive and rely on electronics instead of
mechanics (for the most part).

Think of it this way.  Your 1.3 mpix camera lasted 7 years and only
broke after it had reached the point where it was verging on being
obsolete.  My cell phone as a 1.3 mpix camera in it.  Your camera
served you well.

The good news is that if you want to stay with a camera that small,
just upgrade your cell phone.  Oh course you wouldn't be happy with
that, so go out and get the Olympus if it meets your needs.
