I was looking to purchase the 'Canon Normal EF 50mm f/1.8 II Autofocus
Lens' at bhphotovideo.com as my first nice (non-kit) lens.  They show
an imported and a USA version of what apears to be the same lens.  Can
someone tell me what the difference is, other than the five dollar
price tag, and which would have better optics?

TIA,
Ron

You can't get US warranty repairs with the import.

I bought a grey-market 100-400LIS from B&H, and later brought it back
for repairs, and when it came back a few weeks later, it had paperwork
from Canon Service Dept.

Probably means B&H sent it to Canon and paid for the repair rather than for
free under warrantee.

Probably with a large-customer discount, as well.

Works better for me, as I'd rather bring the item to B&H than to pay to
ship it somewhere.  I hate shipping things, and I hate receiving
packages.

So I take it you are saying you think it was a good place to save ten
dollars?

Thanks,
Ron

I saved over $100, not $10.  For $10, I would do whatever is most
convenient for me.  If you'd rather send or bring it to Canon yourself,
then spend the extra $10.

The difference is the warrantee. Items marked USA are covered by the
manufacturer's warrantee while the Imported items are covered by B*H itself.

One thing to take into consideration might be a difference in the LENGTH of
the warranty. Weight that against the complexity of the item and the price
differential. I opted for the USA Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 VR with a 3 yr
warranty, vs the import with a 1yr warranty by B&H. In my case it also
helped Nikon had a rebate on the USA item. For the relatively simple TC-20E
I chose to go with the import.
