Howdy,

Sometime between now and this summer, I need to purchase a canon 5d and
some canon lenses, flashes, etc. A whole system from the ground up. I
see a rebate program just ended. What has happened in the past? Should
I wait? I noticed that the 5d was not part of the program, is it
unlikely that a pro camera will get a rebate?

Any help would be very appreciated!

thanks.

Often a rebate means that the item is about to be discontinued.
Otherwise they precede a general price decrease, or the annual attempt
to increase market share at Christmas.

Canon does not consider the 5D as a "pro cmaera" the price around here has
dropped $300 since it was introduced. I would expect more price drops.
Rebates are scams, I prefer a price drop.

While I agree that a general price drop is preferred over a rebate,
I'll deal with the paperwork of rebates if it saves me enough money.
During the recent Canon rebates, my father, mother, brother, brother's
SO, and I bought:
2 20Ds
1 Rebel XT
1 580EX Flash
1 28-135 IS
1 70-200 F/4 L
1 20-200 f/2.8 IS USM L
etc...

Needless to say, with the triple-discounts that we qualified for, the
savings were astounding (i.e., the 20Ds ended up costing a little over
$900 each!)

That paperwork will ensure your information (and the rest of your families)
is distributed to thousands of marketing lists. You've been bought.

What did you pay for the latter lens? Sounds like one I want. If I could
afford it..... if it's being manufactured.

Oops, Of course I meant the 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM...

As far as my info being sold, is that any different than simply sending
in the warranty registration card?

yes, your warranty reg. card goes to the manufacturer. Rebates are offered
by third party companys that have made deals with the manufacturer. Their
main job it to compile lists for telemarketers and other related information
harvesters.

Thanks,

I will keep an eye out. I also wonder if it is common for canon to
introduce new equipment at the orlando show. In particular, I am
dreaming of a faster "IS" lenses to mate with my new 5d. That f4 24-105
looks sharp, but I would die for a 2.8 lens.

Can anyone speak to the other IS lenses in that range, the 28-135. I
think it is a bit older. It is $500 buck cheaper though.
