Do you think Nikon will come out with a new SLR in 2006?

I was thinking about buying a new SLR and I am leaning towards the D70s
since I already have several Nikon AF lenses.  Since the D70s only has
a few small feature enhancements compared to the D70, do you think
Nikon will come out with a new D70 replacement in 2006?

I know about the D200 but that is just to much money.

It's worth every penny since it is severely under priced at $1,699.95.  I
had mine since Friday and it's fantastic.  You probably won't be getting one
for a while paying list price since there is a feeding frenzy on them right
now.  There are fools on eBay paying up to $2,600 for one.  It's foolish to
pay more than $1,699.95 and free shipping for one when you can wait several
weeks when the market will be flooded with them in a few weeks.

Sure, go ahead and make us jealous :)  I added a D50 to my camera bag the
day you got your D200.  I use a Sigma DSLR and will continue to do so but I
need something that does better in low light and the Nikon fits the bill
nicely.  I was set to get the E500 but then decided to handle the Nikon some
more and take some more test shots.  I decided on the D50 and I'm happy with
it.  I haven't done much other than just playing around in the house with it
but I'm impressed with the noise levels at high ISO.  I didn't get any kit
lenses, I opted for a Tokina 28-70mm AT-X PRO SV and I'm quite happy with
what I've seen so far.  Still, the E500 is a great value with the two kit
lenses, they are quite good for kit lenses.

Congrats on the D50.  I'm sure you will have a great time with it since it
is a great performer like the D70/D70s.

I saw a rumour that they might bring out two new cameras based on the
APS-size sensor used in the Sony R1 - so perhaps with live preview (and no
mirror)?

You mean APS-C?

It wouldn't be a DSLR.

Well, whatever size the sensor is in the R1!
Let's not call it names - it's 21.5mm x 14.4mm.

As large sensor cameras, possibly with interchangeable lenses, and
electronic rather than optical reflex (so no mirror), these cameras could
well be of interest to those who want a DSLR.

I don't want to get off topic here so does anyone really think there
will be a replacement for the D70s in 2006?

Yes, there will be a replacement for the D70/70s in 2006.  It will come out
sometime in 2007, however.

Nikon is rumoured to be dropping all film cameras in FY 2006

Source?

Including the F6?  (If so, I'm gonna git me one on clearance!)

In Canada the FM-3A(black) is discontinued, as is the D100, D80, D75 etc..
I'll find the list I have, but Nikon Canada will no longer stock them. I
predict Kodak will drop all non-C41 B&W films FY 2006 with the excuse "we
don't make paper anymore" I expect to see film to be discontinued 2007.

Thanks for all who replied.  I just see the D70/D70s as virtually the
same camera and it has been around for 3+ yrs.  With camera's like the
Rebel XT or even the D50, its hard to justify going to the D70s.
Excuse my ignorance if this is not the case, but wouldn't it make sense
for Nikon to brigde the gap between the D50 and the D200?
Patco - 24 Dec 2005 00:23 GMT
Nikon announced the D70 Jan 28, 2004, and it was generally available in
March, I believe.
So, it's a tad under 2 years, not 3+.

So what if you called up say Henrys and tried to order a D100.  Would
they tell you to go to the B&H web site or special-order it for you?
from Nikon USA???

I have been told by someone who reads the trade press (not sure which
pub) that Kodachrome could be discontinued as early as 2007 or 2008.
Right now, there is only one place in North America that still
processes Kodachrome, with 2 other labs in Switzerland and Japan.  The
Swiss lab is supposed to be closing its K-14 line in 2006 or 2007.

What sources, if any, do you have for your predictions?

The D70s is the D70 replacement.....

I'm waiting for my D200 -  if you are interested, I'll make you a good
deal on my lightly used, customized D70s.....:)

I have put off the D200 for now, but B&H just emailed me that the
18-200mm DX VR lens is on the way. I should have it in a couple of
weeks (they send it to our daughter, who forwards it to me in the
Philippines). There are a couple reasons for delaying -- I want Nikon
to have a chance to work out any bugs discovered by the early adopters,
I have already spent enough on lenses the last few months, and I am
concerned about duties on a camera. Technically, as an American citizen
who is only visiting, I should be duty free, but I don't feel like
arguing with Philippines customs right now. It would be nice to have a
second body, though.

Hard to say. The D70 is a little long in the tooth and the only thing
that was really upgraded in the D70s was the LCD. Still, it is
difficult to see what they would do to replace the D70 other than maybe
increase the megapixels to, say, 8. Even the increase to 10 MP does not
make it worth upgrading to the D200 for that reason alone -- it just
does not improve performance that much. So, if anything, Nikon might
release a "D80" that has an 8MP chip, but otherwise is a D70. I give
the D70s another year.

Well there have been lots of rumors about a full-frame DSLR.  Details
are not really available, and it's hard to know how many of the
postings in various venues are just wishful thinking.  Of course, it
won't be cheap.

If the recent runup to the D200 announcement is any indication, if a
full-frame sensor  camera were to be announced say at PhotoKina in
September 2006, the rumor will become active around June-July.

Undoubtedly.  In fact, I'd be willing to bet that they come out with more
than one.
