Hi folks,
I'm about to buy a Nikon D50. I'm new to DSLRs and have done a lot of
research into which one to get - I've finally decided on the D50
(Please don't try and put me off at this point!!).
Question is, I'm trying to work out which lense to get. I'm likely to
take mainly family - type shots, with a few landscapes, and some
portraits of my daughter.
The three I'm considering are:
1. The standard kit 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED LENS
2. The Nikon18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 DX LENS
3. Tamron AF28-75mm f2.8 XR Di
Your suggestions greatlfully received!
Regards,
kev

Not wide angle enough. I started with a 28-200 & while I survived, it
was really annoying to be unable to capture landscapes or architecture.
Or group shots where you don't have room to back up. Vacation scenery...
Unless you think you will spring for a 12-24 in the future.

There is always a compromise with lens choice.Your 28-200 is too broad of a
range. Anything more than 3x is trying to get too much out of one lens. You
will lose sharpness and speed. The lenses he listed are more in the range of
most shots. Yes an extreme wide angle might be handy,it is not the first
lens I would recommend!

Agreed, I didn't know what I wanted when I got that. If it was the new
18-200 maybe though, I really missed the wide angle having that as my
only lens.

18mm on digital is really useful though and not extreme. You won't get
that on a typical pocket digital.

I have the 18-70 on my D70,and the 28-75 Tamron on my Canon 20D.Both are
very good lenses. The Tamron works well in low light situations. The 18-55 is
not near as good as either of these.I would also suggest the 70-200 2.8
Tamron for your next lens,or the Sigma version.

I just looked at a bunch of these options and decided on the 18-70 mm
Nikon. It's versatile and an excellent value for the money and should
be easy to sell on Ebay later if I decide I want better ones.

I just received my D50 last week and the lens I ordered was the Tokina
28-70mm f2.8 AT-X 287 AF PRO SV. Although I haven't obviously had a chance
to use it mush since I just got it on Friday, I tested it a bit and it seems
to be a good choice for me. Could I stand to have a wider lens? Sure, but
for starters this seems to be a good choice for me. My preference would be
a Sigma 24-70mm EZ DG but the cost was a bit too much right now. I have
that lens for my Sigma DSLR and it is quite good.

Get the 18-70mm - great value, wide end equivalent to 28mm, compact, fast
focussing...
Take lots of photos - it will become obvious later if you need any more
lenses.

All,
Thanks very much for your helpful posts - I'm going to go with the
18-70 as a start...... I'll then need to work out which tele-zoom to
get..... but I'll worry about that after Christmas!
Thanks again,
Kev

About a year ago I bought my D70 with the 18-70 kit lens.
It is a fine and versatile lens comsidering the price.
To day I bring only a 24 mm f:2,8 and a 50 mm f:1,8 when I go out.
And I rarely switch between them - its either one or the other.
Why is it so? For about 25 years have I used just one lens (28 mm
aequvalent, "normal" or short tele, be it 24x36, 6x6 or 6x9) and have
become acustomed to adjust the way I see things to the lens I use.
Using the 18-70 kit-lens confused my visual conception, I believe.
And then - the Nikon 50mm f:1,8 is a marvellous lens at a bargain-price.
Just love the way it renders:

NB. There has been done some PP including diffuse glow
