Your compassion is commendable, but a bit overdone. No measurable
functional damage is done to a birch tree by scratching or cutting into
its bark a couple of millimetres, even though a different colour
emerges as a result.
Or, in more anthropomorphic terms: The birch tree couldn't care less.

Cool. I was kidding about the pain part but the unsightliness is another
matter.
