When I run Capture (4.2) on my new PC it immediately reboots the machine. I
transpires this is a known bug.

a.Anyone know of a workaround? (I've tried excluding Capture in the 'Data
Execution Prevention' exceptions - that didn't work).

b.What are the alternative software products? I've got C/S2, but it's a bit
heavyweight for most of the things I need to do. Basically I just want to
play with contrast and brightness and maybe do a bit of cropping. Trouble is
I want to do this to both NEF's and JPEG's .... ? Any ideas?

Panic over, disabled DEP altogether by hacking the boot.ini.

Bl33din' edge technology indeed.

Now you get to try it all over again with Capture 4.4.0 which became
available today.  ;-)

AS per what's new in 4.40:

"What is new/Content Description
There are numerous feature additions and improvements to this new version
of Nikon Capture. This fully functional 30 day trial version will allow you
to try all features before purchase. Nikon Capture Editor supports the
D1-series, D2-series, D100, D70, and Coolpix models which support RAW mode
shooting. Be aware that Nikon Capture Camera Control does not support
Coolpix cameras.

The license validation method has changed between Nikon Capture 4.x and
4.2. License codes from earlier versions of Nikon Capture cannot be used
with Nikon Capture 4.2 or later. If you own a Nikon Capture 4.x license,
which is a 4-word code, please contact Nikon Technical Support for
information on how to obtain your new numeric code."

"Features
Nikon Capture Editor

   * Support for the D200 has been added.
   * Some of the functions performed from the Advanced RAW palette in Tool
Palette 2 have been changed.
o A B&W (black and white) option has been added to the Color Mode
item.
o The method used to reproduce tones in highlight portions
exhibiting a loss of detail when Exp Comp is set to a negative value has
been improved.
+ (Does not apply to RAW images captured with the D1 or
Coolpix-series cameras)
+ When images edited by setting Exp Comp to a negative
value with Nikon Capture ver. 4.3.2 and earlier are opened in Nikon Capture
Ver 4.4.0 or later, the results of compensation in highlights exhibiting a
loss of detail may differ."

And the 4.4.1 updater if you you a Mac and print from Capture.
"What is new/Content Description
An issue that caused a Type 3 error to occur and Nikon Capture 4 to
unexpectedly quit when attempting to print from Nikon Capture 4.4.0 has
been addressed. (Mac OS 9 only)
Compatible OS platform"
