i have had a look through all the manuals i got with the camera and
cant seem to find much on transferring files to pcs. when you plug the
usb cable in "Busy" comes on the LCD. is it ok to just pull the USB
cable out when you are finished transferring files or should you do
something else first? Busy just keeps flashing until the camera goes
into sleep mode if its left plugged into the USB cable.

I just switch the camera off and unplug the cable.

When data is being transfered the orange light glows on the back of the
camera. As long as data transfer is not in progress you should be fine
unplugging the lead. Personally I wait until the phots have been
transferred, switch the camera off, and then unplug the leads.

If you are using windows you should tell windows to disconnect any USB
device before unplugging a USB device. There is a little Icon on the
lower right side of your task bar to allow you to tell windows to
disconnect a USB device.
That being said - you are better off to invest in a card reader then to
download the photos from the camera. Downloading the photos from the
camera discharges the batteries, and the batteries are only good for
around 1000 charges. It is also slower then from a card reader. With
a card reader you can just copy the images to your hard drive and you
are done. The card reader drives run from around $10 to $40 depending
on how fancy you want to get, and if they are single card drives to
really complex drives.
In Linux, you can just disconnect the USB devices without having to
tell the computer first.

The problem is that removing and reinserting the CF card from the camera
every time you want to download images to the computer will cause a lot of wear to
the CF compartment contacts and door. And that'd be a bitch to replace, unlike
a battery.

Frankly I have never heard of the this as a seriuos problem, at work we
have a 4 year old Fuji S1 we use. We photograph a patient and remove
the CF card slip another back in. On a busy day we have 6 or so
patients for this camera, we have been using a card reader for all
those downloads, no problems. I do this with my home camera and so does
the other photographer.
We discussed bent contacts and broken door as a potential problem, in
most cameras the CF compartment is well made with tight tolerences for
inserting the card, so this really doesn't enter the equation as
something to worry about. Yes, maybe there are a few cases of contact
damage, and since the doors seem to be rather weak, they can be broken.
But the time savings and simplicity of using a card reader greatly out
weighs the bent contact, broken door scenario.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. All it takes is one bent pin and
then service. I just buy 1Gb CF card each for my two cameras and I don't
remove it. I don't mind sacrificing battery life. I'd rather pay $30-$60
for a replacement battery than $150-$200+ for a camera ... especially a
DSLR. I have the Digital Rebel and it wasn't easy to come by.

Yeah. Turn it off first. Never disconnect any electronic product without
turning it off first.

Use a CF card reader. You can buy one for $15 or less. It will be MUCH
faster.
