Nikon D50 Price Drop

I noticed Nikon D50 did a significant price drop on the D50.  Was $899,
now $799 and I'm starting to see it on sale it some stores.

Anyone know the reason for the drop?  Problems with the camera? New
model coming out (seems unlikely since it is a fairly new one), etc?

Thanks, rw

Up here in Canada on Thursday September 1, 2005 all dSLR prices dropped by
$100, except the KM 7D which we dropped by $200.

The D50 now sells in Ottawa for $999.99

Market saturation.
I suspect that Nikon and Canon will have a hard time inducing upgrades from
what are very satisfactory dSLRs for most users; Non dSLR users are likely
to be a tough sell also.

I would also expect that they all have a hard time getting P&S users to
move to introductory SLRs...

IMHO the P&S crowd and the DSLR crowd are distinctly different and I
wouldn't think that most of the P&S crowd would consider moving to a DSLR.
In other words I don't think there's much of a market to catch there.

Where I'd guess there's a market is the hold out who wants the quality and
ability of a good camera (DSLR) but won't pay $400 - $600 for a quality P&S
or ZLR camera.  These people would however lay down that kind of money for a
DSLR.  I suspect that both Canon and Nikon will get their entry lever
consumer DSLR down to a $600 price point before too long.

In any event it would be a fairly smart marketing move for Nikon to under
cut Canon's entry level price to capture that market even if they wind up
losing money on units sold.  Make them a Nikon user first and then make
money on upgrades, lenses, accessories, etc.

If this is the case I foresee a price war on the horizon at least at the
consumer level.

Well, certainly the majority of the P&S shooters won't.  But there are two
significant groups who might: those who are becoming more and more
interested in photography for its own sake because of their digital P&S
cameras, and those who have P&S digitals but also come from film SLR's, and
had just been putting getting a digital SLR until it seemed worth their
while.

I don't disagree here at all, however, I'll bet there are a lot more coming
from film SLR's over P&S's.

In any event, Nikon would be smart at this point to price the D50 such that
they can just dump tons of them on the market.  All those people who bought
the Canon Rebel Film SLR are chomping at the bit to get a "cheap" DSLR and
IMO Nikon could have an opportunity here to push the D50 in that direction
before the original DRebel gets there.  I'd guess that the Camera with Lens
would have to have MSRP of around $600.

Loss leader?  Trying to drum up market share?  There is very little new
in the D50 over the D100 or D70(s), and as such, most of the parts are
probably purchased in significant bulk.  Get a new D50 user on the cheap
and lock them into a lens system and you have sales for years to come.

That's assuming the entry-level D50 lasts for years.
What's it's shutter rating?

Over here the D50 is less than a 350D and Nikon are throwing in a free
lens... ok it's a rubbish 70-300mm f5.6 lump of Coke bottle glass but
the punters don't know that.

The Pentax and Olympus are well under these two and only K/M are brave
enough to be well over Canon and Nikon (they must sells ones and twos
every month nationally!).

It's a crowded market.

Can't be any worse than Canon's 18-55mm and you have to pay for that.
