I'm using a Canon Rebel and am new to digital cameras.

I have a perfectly fine Sunpak Auto 511 flashgun which I used successfully
with both my Olympus SLR and a number of lenses on my 4x5. Can this
flashgun be used with my Canon or must I get a gun specifically for this
camera?

1: Your Rebel may not like trigger voltages above 6V.  To make sure
you don't damage the camera, measure the voltage between the pins
of the flash when fully charged /before/ you try putting it in the
hotshoe - or get a Wein SafeSync thingy or a slave trigger unit.

2. There is no need for a dedicated flash.  Some may argue that you
need a dedicated flash for E-TTL (which is true) - but I believe
that auto gives just as reliable flash exposures as Canon's E-TTL
  system.

I discuss the use of auto flashes on Canon DSLRs at the bottom
of this webpage: http://folk.uio.no/gisle/photo/flash.html .

Thank you very much. I went to your web page; it is very helpful and I'll
have to take the time to study it further.

You got a 401 return code - or was it another error?

401, I can't explain.  There is no access restrictions on that page.
If you got another error code, the server hiccupped.

Anyway - it appears to be working now.  Plaese try again.

Your owner's manual should be able to tell you if your camera is
limited to a certain maximum trigger voltage.  My 20D manual does.
