My question would be, why the change? I've seen CF cards in cameras much
smaller than the D50.

SD seems to be common on low-end (non-SLR) cameras. I bet their market
research told them that many potential D50 buyers already have an SD
card or two, but no CF.

It's almost certainly a marketing decision. It makes the D50 appear to
be in a different market segment than the D70. Marketing driven
companies are very concerned about not hurting sales of their higher
end products with lower end products. One thing good about Canon is
that they are more engineering driven. I would have been surprised if
they had gone from CF to SD on their low end digital SLRs. They use
other factors to distinguish between products in different segments.
