Time to start saving...
I doubt that it will be much less of a bombshell in the market that the
D70 was a year or so ago.

This is sometimes done simply to prevent anyone else from using it.

Nikon did this with D50 in Feb 2005. There will be a D200 soon, but NDA
prevent anyone with inside info to reveal real details.
My speculation is a second generation megapixel LBCAST (3 generation of the
D2H sensor) in a D100 chassis. I would suggest a non switchable 12 mp, not
the 6/12 mp in the D2X. Sorry no 24x36mm "full-frame" sensor. Expect more
DX lenses announced at the same time. It will be a good follow-up for the
D100.

A replacement for the D70s? Or positioned in between the D2-series
and the D70s?

Intermediate model, replaces the D100. Aimed at the same market segment as
the Canon 20D

I guess now people are hoping the D200 manual will get leaked like the D50
and D70s were. Bet Nikon's webmaster won't make that error again ;)

mind on Sake!

Something to fill the gap between $1k and $5k...a D100 replacement to
compete with Canon's 20D.
Maybe 12MP and $1.5k???

I doubt it. D200 should be around $1500. What you are suggesting cost a
lot more than that and if Nikon can get it at that price, even at $2000,
it'll be a new leader.

I would guess $2,000 CDN, was sort of a hint.

Walt,
Where did you check this?
Has Nikon trademarked something like D300 or D2Xs or even D3? -:)

Go to the US Patent & Trademark Office website <http://www.uspto.gov/>
select Trademarks -> Search
select "New User Form Search (Basic)"
Enter Search Term: "Nikon"
Select Search Field: "Owner Name and Address"
Then hit "Submit Query" button
> A replacement for the D70s? Or positioned in between the D2-series

The D100/D200 are Nikon's "intermediate" series camera positioned
between the "entry" series D70 and the "advanced" series D1/D2. Single
digit model number for advanced, double digit for entry, tripple digit
for intermediate.
Randy.

Walt,
Thanks for the URL. I went to this web site and here is part of the
info for the D2X:
Word Mark D2X
Goods and Services IC 009. US 021 023 026 036 038. G & S: digital
cameras.
FIRST USE: 20050225. FIRST USE IN COMMERCE: 20050225
Mark Drawing Code (1) TYPED DRAWING
Serial Number 78226472
Filing Date March 17, 2003
Current Filing Basis 1B
Original Filing Basis 1B
Published for Opposition March 23, 2004
Owner (APPLICANT) NIKON CORPORATION CORPORATION
JAPAN 2-3, Marunouchi 3-chome Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo JAPAN 100-8331
Note that Nikon filed for this trademark about a year before it was
"published for opposition," which I guess means that other companies
can claim that Nikon is infringing on their trademark.
And, the trademark was filed about 18 months before the D2X was even
announced.
I don't know anything about trademarks and trademarking. Does anyone
in this group know if this 12 and 18 month lead time is typical for
Nikon or for photomanufacturers in general?
So, is the actual D200 announcement about 18 months away? For
competitive reasons, I would doubt it.
There was no trademark filing for a D3 or D2Xs or D2-anything beyond
the D2X. But in this case I wouldn't be surprised if Nikon is
planning a late 2006 or even 2007 announcement for the D2X follow-on.

The D50 was registered Feb 18, 2005, I would suggest the D200 could ship
before Christmas 2005.
